Master Momentum and Survival at Circuit de Lédenon - Grand Prix

How to maximize consistency, safety, and maximizing exit speed for the Ray FF1600 (Formula Ford) at Circuit de Lédenon - Grand Prix.

1) TRACK SNAPSHOT

  • Location & layout: Lédenon, Gard, France. Grand Prix layout approx. 3.15 km (1.96 mi), anti-clockwise. Official turn count commonly listed as 13; some sources number 14–15 depending on kinks (assumption: 13 for iRacing GP).
  • Character: Very technical, big elevation changes (crests/compressions), several blind entries, and many medium-speed lefts. Surface has mixed camber; some bumps in compressions. Curbs are generally serrated/tall at apexes and flatter at exits—treat apex curbs with respect in a light car.
  • Three corners that matter most for lap time:
    • Final complex onto the main straight (T12–T13, names vary): Exit speed sets S/F straight; easy to over-slow. Prioritize a clean, early throttle application.
    • “Triple Left” sequence mid-lap (T4–T6, assumption): Momentum corner-family; minimizing scrub through the set pays across the next sector.
    • Downhill hairpin in the compression (“La Cuvette,” assumption, T7): Big braking + rotation in a dip; a strong exit drives the following climb.

2) INCIDENT & TRACK-LIMIT HOTSPOTS (Rookie Priorities)

  • T1 left: Cold tires + blind-ish turn-in; easy to turn in too early and pick up a 1x on inside curb or wash wide on exit.
  • T3–T6 (triple-left family): Inside serrated curbs can bounce the FF1600; running wide at final left earns 1x and kills exit speed.
  • T7 downhill hairpin (compression): Rear gets light on brake release; trail too deep and you’ll snap or run out of road at exit.
  • Cresting right (T9, assumption): Light car + lift-oversteer risk; commit to a smooth line and avoid mid-corner throttle stabs.
  • T10 left onto short back straight: Pinching the exit = big lap-time loss; exit curb can be edgy under power.
  • Final T13 right onto S/F: Classic 1x hotspot if you drop all four on exit; also where impatience causes rear slip and slow down the straight.
  • Safe rejoin notes:
    • After off at T1 or T13, rejoin parallel to traffic—don’t U-turn across the racing line.
    • After T7 off, stay inside the compression area, wait for a gap; cars cresting behind have poor sight lines.
  • Pit entry/exit gotchas (assumptions):
    • Pit entry: On right after T13; the commit line is near the start of the pit wall—get fully to the right early and avoid cutting across traffic on the racing line.
    • Pit exit: Blend line feeds you to drivers approaching T1; stay on the blend until clear—don’t dart left.

3) RACECRAFT PLAN (Ray FF1600)

  • Drafting zones and clean passes:
    • S/F straight into T1: Best slipstream spot. Preferred pass to the inside (track right to left), complete early, prioritize your exit—don’t over-slow.
    • Downhill into T7 hairpin: Out-brake on the inside, square the exit; set up by getting a better run through T6.
    • T10 left: If you get a superior run out of T9, show nose inside before braking; commit to a clean late apex so you don’t pinch the exit.
  • Defensive lines that preserve exit:
    • T1: Shallow entry, brake on the inside, release smoothly and open hands early—protects position without killing top speed.
    • T7: Park the car on apex/inside; early but gentle throttle to keep exit speed.
    • T13: Defend inside only once; focus on straightening the wheel early so you’re not a sitting duck down S/F.
  • Start/first-lap survival:
    • Brake 10–20 m earlier than normal at T1 and T7.
    • Expect accordion effects into T7 (downhill braking). Leave an extra car length on entries in lap 1–2.
    • Escape routes: T1 has asphalt runoff—go straight if boxed-in. At T7, use the inside runoff and rejoin late, parallel.

4) DRIVING LINE & MARKERS (Corner-by-corner)

Note: Corner count/names may vary across guides. This is a rookie-safe schema for iRacing’s GP layout.

5) BRAKING & GEARS (Rookie Baselines)

  • First laps references:
    • T1: brush brake/lift using end of pit wall as reference.
    • T2: 100 m board to 80–90 m.
    • T7: full reference braking at 90–100 m (downhill—earlier when tires are cold).
    • T10: 70–80 m.
    • T13: 70–80 m.
  • Gears (assumption for Ray FF1600):
    • 4th on the main/back straights, 3rd for most mediums (T2/3/4/5/6/9/10/12/13), 2nd for T7 hairpin.
    • Validate by: no over‑rev on downshift, engine pulls cleanly on exit, delta improves when short‑shifting if traction-limited.
  • Brake release notes:
    • Use long, gentle trail into T7/T10/T13 to rotate the car.
    • Linear brush and early release at fast kinks (T1/T11).
  • Mid‑stint adjustments:
    • If fronts go away: move bias rearward 0.5–1.0% and lengthen trail slightly.
    • If rear gets lively over crests: add 0.5–1.0% forward bias, smooth inputs, and brake a touch earlier.

6) CAR CONTROL CUES (Momentum Car Emphasis)

  • Rotation method: Prefer light trail brake to apex in slow/mediums (T7/T10/T13). In faster corners, a micro‑lift is safer than extra steering angle.
  • Steering‑angle discipline: Aim to straighten early at T6 exit and T13 exit—these feed important straights.
  • Throttle patterns:
    • “Brush, hold, squeeze” through the triple-left—constant small throttle stabilizes the rear.
    • “Wait for it” at T7/T13—no rush; let the car point before full throttle.
    • Avoid binary inputs over crests (T9)—blend throttle.

7) CURBING, BUMPS & SURFACE CHANGES

  • Attack:
    • Exit curbs at T6/T10/T13 are usable if the car is settled—partial use only.
    • Light brushes at T3–T5 apex if the car isn’t bounced; avoid the tallest serrations.
  • Avoid:
    • Tall inside sausages at T7/T9/T11—will unsettle or cause 1x.
    • Big exit curb strikes with wheelspin (T10/T13).
  • Surface quirks:
    • Compression at T7 gives grip on entry then unloads on release—be ready for rear step-out.
    • Crests at T1/T9 reduce vertical load—gentle hands.

8) SETUP / DRIVER ADJUSTMENTS

  • Setup rules this week: Assuming FIXED for Ray FF1600 official. If Open in your session, still keep changes minimal.
  • Driver adjustments (Fixed):
    • Brake bias start: 60–62% to front. Move ±1% as confidence/tires evolve.
    • In-car: If rear gets nervous in T9/T13, add +0.5% front bias. If car won’t rotate in T7, try −0.5%.
    • Tire pressures: Use fixed values; expect pressures to rise 3–5 psi. Warm up gently lap 1–2.
    • FFB: Reduce min force/clipping; this track has compressions and curbs—clarity beats weight.

(If Open: conservative baseline—pressures near iRacing recommendations, slight front toe‑out (0.5–1.0 mm total) for response, modest rear toe‑in (0.5 mm) for stability, neutral camber relative to wear, brake bias 60–62%. Avoid stiff ARBs; compliance helps over bumps.)

9) TELEMETRY & METRICS TO TRACK

  • Sector breakdown:
    • S1: T1–T3 (opening rhythm, first commitment).
    • S2: T4–T9 (triple-left momentum + crest management).
    • S3: T10–T13 (exit-critical final sector).
  • Rookie targets (focus corners):
    • T6 min: 62–66 mph (100–106 km/h).
    • T7 min: 40–45 mph (64–72 km/h).
    • T13 min: 58–62 mph (93–100 km/h), clean early throttle.
  • Consistency goal: ±0.3–0.5 s lap-to-lap over a 5‑lap run; zero 1x.
  • Telemetry checks:
    • Brake release timing: Smooth, continuous release into T7/T13.
    • Throttle pickup: No long coasts in T13; commit once pointed.
    • Steering saturation: Watch for sustained max steering at T5/T6—reduce scrub with earlier, gentler inputs.

10) PRACTICE PLAN (45 minutes)

  • 0–10 min:
    • Out-lap, find references (boards, end of curbs, marshal posts).
    • Gentle tire warmup; no kerb attacks.
    • Success: 0x, clear visual markers for T1/T7/T13.
  • 10–25 min:
    • Drill exit corners: T6 → T7 entry, T10, T13.
    • Log min speeds and throttle-on points.
    • Success: +2–3 mph improvement in T6/T13 mins without 1x.
  • 25–35 min:
    • Two 5‑lap race-pace runs; leave 10–20 m extra braking at T1/T7.
    • Success: Each run within ±0.5 s; no off-tracks.
  • 35–40 min:
    • Pit in/out at pace. Hit speed limiter on time, clean blend on exit.
    • Success: Zero speeding, safe merge.
  • 40–45 min:
    • Draft practice if someone’s around; one cooldown lap, note hot pressures.
    • Success: Execute one clean pass into T1 or T7 without hurting exits.

11) QUICK CHECKLIST (pre-race)

  • Brake bias start point: 61% (range 60–62%).
  • First-lap brake margins: +15 m at T1, +20 m at T7.
  • Two “free time” fixes:
    • Open hands earlier at T13; let the car out fully.
    • Maintain a whisper of throttle through T5/T6 to stabilize the rear.
  • Two safety traps to avoid:
    • Don’t straddle tall inside curbs in the triple-left—bounce → spin.
    • Don’t turn across traffic for pit entry at T13—commit early to the right if pitting.
  • Fuel note: No stop likely. If needed for hosted/longer races, budget ~1.6–1.8 L/lap (assumption) + 2 laps buffer.

12) ONE-PAGE SUMMARY

  • Lédenon GP is anti-clockwise, hilly, with blind crests—drive with margin early.
  • Momentum > everything: prioritize exits at T6, T10, and especially T13.
  • T7 (compression hairpin) demands early, straight braking and long, gentle trail to rotate.
  • Use micro‑lifts at fast kinks (T1/T11) rather than extra steering—avoid scrub.
  • Avoid serrated apex curbs in triple-left; partial exits are OK when settled.
  • Brake bias 60–62%; adjust ±0.5–1% to balance rotation vs stability.
  • Rookie targets: T6 62–66 mph, T7 40–45 mph, T13 58–62 mph; consistency ±0.5 s.
  • Best passing: into T1 (draft), T7 (inside), T10 (if you win T9).
  • First lap: add 15–20 m in braking zones; be patient into T7.
  • Zero 1x is the goal—finish clean to build SR and confidence.
