Master Momentum and Survival at Circuit des 24 Heures du Mans - 24H

How to maximize consistency, safety, and maximizing exit speed for the Ray FF1600 (Formula Ford) at Circuit des 24 Heures du Mans - 24H.

1) TRACK SNAPSHOT

  • Location & layout: Le Mans (Sarthe, France). 13.626 km / 8.467 mi. Clockwise. Official turn count often cited as ~38 (ACO); iRacing HUD may number fewer by grouping kinks. This guide consolidates into 20 practical corners for teaching.
  • Character:
    • Mix of permanent circuit and public roads: variable surface, road crown, and bumps.
    • Elevation: crest under Dunlop Bridge, downhill to Esses; slight banking at Indianapolis; flat, grippy new asphalt near Ford Chicane in the sim.
    • Curbs: Generally flat on Mulsanne chicanes; tall/abrasive “sausage” at Ford Chicanes; Dunlop chicane inside has aggressive inner curbing; Porsche Curves kerbs are usable but punish over-attack.
  • Three corners that matter most for lap time (momentum/exit):
    1. T7 Tertre Rouge — exit speed sets your entire Mulsanne Straight; most important throttle-on of the lap.
    2. T11 Mulsanne Corner — huge braking; clean late apex and strong exit feed the Indianapolis run.
    3. T14–T17 Porsche/Corvette sequence — long, flowing; steering discipline and minimum speed here swing delta massively.

2) INCIDENT & TRACK-LIMIT HOTSPOTS (Rookie Priorities)

  • Dunlop Chicane (T2–T3): Stack-ups Lap 1. Over-optimistic dives, inner sausage curb launches, and rejoin chaos if you miss the apex.
  • Esses (T4–T6): Off-camber feel at pace; rear can rotate unexpectedly on a lift; 1x on exit if you run wide.
  • Tertre Rouge (T7): Easy 1x or slowdown if you open exit too far; do not cut the inside green/astro turf.
  • Mulsanne Chicanes 1 & 2 (T8–T10): Slowdown if you slice inside; braking variations with wind/draft cause rear-end shunts.
  • Mulsanne Corner (T11): Huge closing speeds; out-braking yourself = gravel and unsafe rejoin. Stay off the marbles.
  • Indianapolis/Arnage (T12–T13): Side-by-side pinches; Arnage exit lures throttle-too-early spins and 1x.
  • Porsche Curves to Corvette/Karting (T14–T18): Wall proximity; over-commit leads to snaps or understeer to off-tracks.
  • Ford Chicanes (T19–T20): Big slowdowns if you straight-line too much; exit wall on S/F; pit-entry confusion causes incidents.
  • Safe rejoin notes:
    • Use escape asphalt at Dunlop and Ford Chicanes; stop, check relative, rejoin parallel to traffic.
    • If you overshoot Mulsanne Corner or Arnage, rejoin only when the lane is clear; do not turn across the racing line.
  • Pit entry/exit:
    • Entry: Far right before Ford Chicane commitment. Signal early; stay right of the solid line. Speed limit begins at the cone/line at pit entry (assume 60 km/h / 37 mph limit; verify in-session).
    • Exit: Long blue blend line on right of pit straight. Stay right until the end of the line; oncoming traffic is fast and may be unsighted over the slight crest.

3) RACECRAFT PLAN (Ray FF1600)

  • Drafting zones:
    • Massive: Start/finish → Dunlop; Tertre Rouge → both Mulsanne chicanes; Second chicane → Mulsanne Corner; Arnage → Porsche Curves entry.
  • Clean passing spots (preferred side/setup):
    • Dunlop Chicane: Inside move with early lift+downshift; defend exit by not pinching.
    • Mulsanne Chicane 1 & 2: Get overlap before 150 m; choose inside, brake straight and early; prioritize the second part’s exit.
    • Mulsanne Corner: Classic out-brake to inside; brake in a straight line, square it, V it off the corner.
    • Arnage: Inside, very late apex; maintain exit so you’re not re-passed.
    • Ford Chicane: Only if you’re clearly alongside before turn-in; otherwise set up S/F draft.
  • Defensive lines (without killing exit):
    • Hold center-right on straights to discourage late lunges; return to normal outside braking line only if safe.
    • Into chicanes: A gentle middle defense is enough; do not double-move or park apex; roll speed to protect exit against the over-slow divebombers.
  • Start/first-lap survival:
    • Brake at +30–50 m earlier than normal at T1/T2. Expect chain reactions.
    • Biggest pileups: Dunlop Chicane, Mulsanne Chicane 1, Mulsanne Corner, Porsche Curves entry.
    • Escape routes: Dunlop runoff straight-ahead; both Mulsanne chicanes have paved escapes—use them if boxed in.

4) DRIVING LINE & MARKERS (Corner-by-corner)

Note: We group minor kinks and focus on 20 teaching corners. “Min Speed” are rookie targets in mph. Adjust with delta.

5) BRAKING & GEARS (Rookie Baselines)

  • First laps references:
    • Dunlop Chicane: 125–150 m.
    • Tertre Rouge: gentle brush ~75–100 m.
    • Mulsanne Chicanes: 130–150 m; extend to 160 m if in deep draft.
    • Mulsanne Corner: 160–190 m (big stop).
    • Arnage: 120–140 m.
    • Porsche/Corvette/Karting: mostly lifts/brushes; keep the car balanced, brake in a straight line where possible.
  • Gears (Ray FF1600, assumption 4-speed):
    • Dunlop Chicane: 2nd.
    • Esses: 3rd.
    • Tertre Rouge: 3rd (short-shift if needed).
    • Mulsanne Chicanes: 2nd.
    • Mulsanne Corner: 2nd.
    • Indianapolis: 4th with a lift; then 2nd for Arnage.
    • Porsche Curves: 4th → lift to balance; down to 3rd for Corvette; 2nd for Karting/Ford if needed.
    • Validate by: avoid over-rev, check delta; if bogging, use one gear lower; if wheelspin on exit, try one higher/earlier upshift.
  • Brake release:
    • Use long, gentle trail into rotation corners (Dunlop chicane, Mulsanne Corner, Arnage).
    • Linear brush with quick release for fast sweepers (Porsche entry/right/left) to preserve balance.
  • Mid‑stint adjustments:
    • As tires heat and track rubbers: extend braking by 5–10 m; slightly earlier throttle at exits with straighter wheel.
    • Headwind on Mulsanne = brake later; tailwind = earlier, more conservative.

6) CAR CONTROL CUES (Momentum Car Emphasis)

  • Rotation method:
    • Primarily trail brake into the slow corners (Dunlop chicane, both Mulsanne chicanes, Mulsanne Corner, Arnage).
    • Use lift-to-rotate in medium/fast (Esses, Porsche sequence).
  • Steering-angle discipline:
    • Unwind early at every exit; straight steering before full throttle, especially at Arnage and Ford Chicane.
    • Porsche Curves: small inputs, hold a steady slip; avoid sawing the wheel.
  • Throttle application patterns:
    • Be decisive once pointed: progressive but continuous application.
    • Tertre Rouge and Porsche entry: commit to throttle once set—partial lifts cost more than a slightly slower apex.

7) CURBING, BUMPS & SURFACE CHANGES

  • Attack:
    • Mulsanne chicanes: skim flat entry/exit curbs to straighten; avoid cutting inner raised sections.
    • Corvette: mild curb is okay to rotate.
  • Avoid:
    • Ford Chicanes sausages: they will bounce the Ray and cause slowdowns/1x or damage.
    • Dunlop inner sausages: can launch or unsettle on Lap 1.
  • Surface/bump notes:
    • Public-road crown on Mulsanne and into Mulsanne Corner—stay off the outer marbles/brake on the flattest part.
    • Indianapolis has slight banking; you can lean on it but beware of sudden grip change onto Arnage’s flatter surface.
    • Porsche Curves surface is relatively smooth but punishes over-commitment near walls.

8) SETUP / DRIVER ADJUSTMENTS

  • FIXED (assumed):
    • Driver adjustments:
      • Brake bias start: 60–62% forward. Move rearward by 0.5–1.0% if the car won’t rotate under trail; move forward if you’re locking rears into Arnage.
      • Starting tire pressures: as provided by fixed set; focus on smooth inputs for even temps.
      • FFB: Lower a touch to avoid clipping in big stops and to feel micro-slips in Porsche Curves.
      • Shifting: Short-shift on exits with wheelspin; avoid money-shifts—be deliberate.

9) TELEMETRY & METRICS TO TRACK

  • Sector breakdown (use 4 logical chunks):
    1. Start/Finish → Tertre Rouge exit (launch + Dunlop/Esses technique).
    2. Tertre Rouge → Mulsanne Corner exit (draft management + chicane exits).
    3. Mulsanne Corner exit → Arnage exit (big stop + traction).
    4. Arnage exit → Finish (Porsche/Corvette/Karting/Ford flow).
  • Rookie targets:
    • Tertre Rouge min: 70–75 mph.
    • Mulsanne Corner min: 35–40 mph.
    • Porsche entry min: 70–75 mph.
    • Lap-to-lap variance: aim ±0.5 s over a 5-lap run without 1x.
  • What to inspect on traces:
    • Brake release timing: smooth lengthening trails into slow corners; avoid spikes.
    • Throttle pickup delay: reduce delay after apex where wheel is straight.
    • Steering saturation: watch for long plateaus at high angle in Porsche Curves—means scrub; aim for smaller, steadier angles.

10) PRACTICE PLAN (45 minutes)

  • 0–10 min: Out-lap + references
    • Goals: Find 200/150/100 boards at Dunlop, both Mulsanne chicanes, Mulsanne Corner, Arnage, Ford Chicanes. Warm tires gently. 0 incidents.
  • 10–25 min: Corner families focus
    • Work 3 key areas: Tertre Rouge exits (log min speed), Mulsanne Corner braking/exit (no lockups), Porsche entry flow (min steer angle).
    • Success: Hit target mins within ±3 mph, no off-tracks.
  • 25–35 min: 2×5‑lap safe race-pace runs
    • Aim: Consistency and line repeatability in traffic margins.
    • Success: Each 5-lap run with ≤±0.5 s variance and 0x.
  • 35–40 min: Pit in/out practice
    • Enter at pace, no speeding, correct lane discipline.
    • Success: 3 clean entries/exits; hold blend line on exit.
  • 40–45 min: Draft practice + cool-down
    • Practice timing runs into both Mulsanne chicanes; brake +20 m earlier in heavy draft.
    • Success: 0 contact, 0x, clean passes or abandon early if not clear.

11) QUICK CHECKLIST (pre‑race)

  • Brake bias start point: 61% forward (safe starting value; adjust ±1% as feel dictates).
  • First‑lap brake margins: +40 m at T1/T2; +30 m at Mulsanne Chicane 1.
  • Two “free time” fixes:
    • Open the wheel earlier at every exit; add throttle only as you unwind.
    • Prioritize Tertre Rouge exit: sacrifice entry for a clean, early throttle-on.
  • Two safety traps to avoid:
    • Out-braking yourself at Mulsanne Corner—live to fight the next straight.
    • Hitting sausage curbs at Ford Chicanes—slowdown or damage risk.
  • Fuel note: Official rookie-length FF1600 races typically no-stop. If pit stops are relevant in your session, plan total laps × per-lap usage + 1 lap buffer (assumption; verify consumption in practice).

12) ONE‑PAGE SUMMARY

  • Brake earlier than you think at T1/T2 and the first Mulsanne Chicane on Lap 1.
  • Tertre Rouge is the lap: late apex, early smooth throttle, all exit.
  • Use draft to set passes before braking; brake 20–40 m earlier in slipstream.
  • Mulsanne Corner: straight-line brake, very late apex, V the corner, clean exit.
  • At Arnage: be patient—late apex and straighten the wheel before throttle.
  • Porsche Curves: tiny inputs, steady throttle; don’t fight understeer with more steering.
  • Avoid sausage curbs at Ford; skim flat curbs at Mulsanne chicanes.
  • Keep the car straight on throttle application; short-shift if spinning up.
  • Bias around 61% forward; move as needed to balance rotation vs stability.
  • Consistency > hero laps: target ±0.5 s runs with 0x to build SR and racecraft.
