Master Momentum and Survival at Circuit des 24 Heures du Mans - Bugatti

How to maximize consistency, safety, and maximizing exit speed for the Ray FF1600 (Formula Ford) at Circuit des 24 Heures du Mans - Bugatti.

November 8, 2025

1) TRACK SNAPSHOT

  • Location & layout: Le Mans, France. Length ~4.185 km / 2.60 mi, clockwise. Official turn count: 14 (assumption; iRacing may vary numbering slightly). Notable named corners: Dunlop Chicane, La Chapelle, Musée, Garage Vert (double right), Chemin aux Boeufs (chicane), S Bleus (fast S), Raccordement (final chicane).
  • Character:
    • Elevation: Crest into Dunlop then drop into La Chapelle; otherwise mostly flat.
    • Camber: Helpful positive camber at Garage Vert; neutral-to-light negative in some chicanes.
    • Surface quirks: Subtle bumps into La Chapelle (downhill braking) and Raccordement second apex.
    • Curbs: Generally flat/usable on entries/exits. Sausage curbs at Chemin aux Boeufs and Raccordement can launch the Ray—avoid.
  • Three corners that matter most for lap time:
    1. Garage Vert (T6–T7): Most important exit; sets top speed down the long back straight.
    2. Raccordement (T13–T14): Final chicane exit directly onto main straight.
    3. Dunlop Chicane (T2–T3): Clean exit carries speed all the way to La Chapelle.

2) INCIDENT & TRACK-LIMIT HOTSPOTS (Rookie Priorities)

  • Dunlop Chicane exit (T3): Over-attack inside curb, understeer wide onto green/astro = 1x or spin on throttle.
  • La Chapelle (T4) downhill hairpin: Trail too deep, inside front locks, loops on exit trying to power away.
  • Musée (T5) to Garage Vert (T6–T7): Overlap braking or squeezing throttle early induces push; off-track on exit.
  • Chemin aux Boeufs (T8–T10): Sausage curbs and late brakes = slowdowns and spins. Respect track limits at left-right-left.
  • S Bleus (T11–T12): Fast direction change; grass right-side off exit if you open the wheel too late.
  • Raccordement (T13–T14): Divebomb central; rear snaps on second apex over sausage—common lap-enders.
  • Safe rejoin guidance:
    • La Chapelle and Raccordement are blind/lined with walls. If you spin, hold brakes to stop roll-back, wait for a clear gap, rejoin parallel to flow.
    • After Boeufs, rejoin to the inside (right) along the short chute, signaling with predictable throttle.
  • Pit entry/exit gotchas:
    • Entry: On right before the final Raccordement braking zone (assumption). Commit early; the limiter line arrives quickly.
    • Exit: Blend line keeps you tight right onto the main straight; do not cross left until the line ends—cars at full speed approach rapidly.

3) RACECRAFT PLAN (Ray FF1600)

  • Drafting zones:
    • Main straight and back straight after Garage Vert. Use the tow to set up passes into T1 (Dunlop Chicane) and T8 (Boeufs).
  • Clean passing spots:
    • T1 (Dunlop Chicane): Prefer inside on entry; sell the move early. Don’t compromise exit—no hopping the inside sausage.
    • T4 (La Chapelle): Classic out-brake inside; square exit to defend run to Musée.
    • T8 (Boeufs): Draft + inside brake. Leave room for the triple change—focus on exit line to S Bleus.
    • T13 (Raccordement): Only when overlap is well-established; otherwise focus on a launch for the main straight.
  • Defensive lines that preserve exit:
    • Shallow entries at T4 and T7: Park the car tight mid-corner, straightening your exit early.
    • At chicanes, concede entry but win the second apex/exit. The Ray rewards exits.
  • Start/first-lap survival:
    • Brake 15–25 m earlier for T1 and T4. Expect stack-ups.
    • Likely pileup zones: T1, T4, T13. Escape move: go straight-ish and slow—avoid turning across traffic.
    • Be patient through T8–T10 first time; the field bunches and sausage curbs punish side-by-side.

4) DRIVING LINE & MARKERS (Corner-by-corner)

Assumed turn numbering (T1–T14). Rookie baseline speeds in mph (km/h).

5) BRAKING & GEARS (Rookie Baselines)

  • First laps (conservative baselines):
    • T2 Dunlop Chicane: Brake at 150 m (earlier with tailwind). 4th → 2nd. Long, gentle release.
    • T4 La Chapelle: 4th → 2nd. Start braking just after the crest (~100–110 m). Progressive trail to rotate.
    • T6–T7 Garage Vert: 3rd → 2nd. Short initial hit then long trail; focus on late second apex.
    • T8–T10 Boeufs: 4th → 2nd. Brake at 160–170 m. Keep the car flat over curbs; no sausage.
    • T13–T14 Raccordement: 3rd → 2nd. Brake at 150 m; brief trail at T13; minimal brake for T14.
  • Mid-stint adjustments:
    • As rubber builds, you can brake 5–10 m later at T2/T8; watch rear lock as tires heat—lengthen trail, reduce peak pressure.
    • If rear gets lively, add a click of front bias.
  • Gears (starting point, validate via delta/engine pull):
    • Use 2nd for hairpins/chicanes (T2–T4–T6/7–T8–T10–T13–T14).
    • 3rd for Musée (T5).
    • 4th on straights and S Bleus.
    • Validate: If bogging below ~4000–4500 rpm on exits, try 1 gear lower; if bouncing off limiter too long pre-brake, upshift earlier.

6) CAR CONTROL CUES (Momentum Car Emphasis)

  • Rotation method: Use long, gentle trail-brake to point the nose (T4, T6/7, T13). If understeer mid-corner, a small maintenance-lift rotates better than adding steering.
  • Steering discipline: Unwind early on T7, T12, and T14 exits—scrub is lap time. If you need more lock, you’re too fast or too tight to apex.
  • Throttle patterns:
    • Chicanes: Pause between apexes; don’t hurry the throttle. Smooth 40–70–100% ramp as the wheel opens.
    • Key exits (T7, T14): Commit early but only when you can reduce steering angle—no stabs.

7) CURBING, BUMPS & SURFACE CHANGES

  • Attack:
    • Flat curbs at T2/T3 (modest), T5, T7 (light), T11–T12 (skims) are fine.
  • Avoid:
    • Sausage curbs at T8/T10 and especially T13–T14. They’ll bounce the Ray and trigger slowdowns or spins.
  • Bumps/camber:
    • Downhill brake into T4 is unsettled—start straight, build trail only as speed comes off.
    • T6–T7 has friendly camber—lean on it to finish rotation without adding wheel.
    • Slight bump at T14 inside—be patient over it.

8) SETUP / DRIVER ADJUSTMENTS

  • FIXED (assumption): Driver adjustments only.
    • Brake bias: Start 59–61% front. If rears get loose on entry, add 0.5–1%. If front locks into T2, reduce 0.5%.
    • In-car tools (if available): Small rearward bias for S Bleus confidence; forward bias for T4/T13 security.
    • Tire pressures: Follow fixed. Give them a full lap to come in before pushing.
    • FFB: Avoid clipping; lower overall strength if curb hits mask micro-slips.
  • OPEN (if applicable): Conservative baseline
    • Pressures: Middle of recommended window; target even temps across fronts.
    • Camber: Mild negative to preserve stability under trail; not too aggressive to keep braking footprint.
    • Toe: Tiny front toe-out (0.5–1.0 mm total) for turn-in; rear zero or tiny toe-in for stability.
    • ARBs/diff: Keep soft to maximize mechanical grip; diff coast mild to aid rotation without snap.
    • Brake bias: 59–61% front as above.

9) TELEMETRY & METRICS TO TRACK

  • Sectors (simple three-split plan):
    • S1: Start/Finish to exit T3 (Dunlop Chicane).
    • S2: Exit T3 to exit T7 (Garage Vert).
    • S3: Exit T7 to Finish (Boeufs, S Bleus, Raccordement).
  • Rookie targets:
    • T7 exit min speed: 50–55 mph (80–88 km/h).
    • T14 exit min speed: 35–40 mph (56–64 km/h).
    • T3 exit min speed: 50–55 mph (80–88 km/h).
    • Lap variance goal: ±0.3–0.5 s over a 5‑lap run with zero 1x.
  • What to inspect on traces:
    • Brake release timing at T4/T13—long, smooth ramps.
    • Throttle pickup delay: no big stabs; aim for continuous increase.
    • Steering saturation: flat spots where you hold max lock = scrub; fix with earlier rotation/slower entry.

10) PRACTICE PLAN (45 minutes)

  • 0–10 min: Out‑lap + reference hunt
    • Find 200/150/100 boards for T2/T8/T13; note wind.
    • Warm tires calmly (weaves/lifts). Success: no 1x, stable brakes.
  • 10–25 min: Corner families
    • Work exits at T7 and T14. Log min speeds and exit RPM.
    • Success: +2 mph (3 km/h) average gains on T7/T14 without 1x.
  • 25–35 min: 2×5‑lap race-pace runs
    • Aim consistent, conservative braking. Success: each run within ±0.5 s, zero 1x.
  • 35–40 min: Pit in/out practice
    • Hit limiter cleanly, no speeding; merge respecting blend line. Success: 2 flawless cycles.
  • 40–45 min: Draft practice + cool‑down
    • Practice trailing and overtaking into T1 or T8 without contact. Success: 1 clean pass + 1 clean defense.

11) QUICK CHECKLIST (pre‑race)

  • Brake bias start point: 60% front (±1%).
  • First‑lap brake margins: +20 m at T1 (Dunlop Chicane), +15 m at T4 (La Chapelle).
  • Two “free time” fixes:
    • Look through the second apex of every chicane (T3, T10, T14); don’t fixate on the first.
    • Unwind the wheel before going 100% throttle—especially T7/T14.
  • Two safety traps to avoid:
    • Don’t straddle the sausages at Boeufs or Raccordement.
    • Don’t turn across traffic after a spin at T4/T14—hold brakes and reset.
  • Fuel note: Typical rookie races won’t require a stop; carry race distance + 1 lap buffer (assumption).

12) ONE‑PAGE SUMMARY

  • Protect the exits at Garage Vert (T7) and Raccordement (T14)—they define your lap.
  • Brake earlier than you think at T1/T4 on Lap 1; expect stack-ups.
  • Use long, gentle trail to rotate; lift-to-rotate beats adding steering lock.
  • Avoid sausage curbs at Boeufs and Raccordement—slowdowns and spins.
  • Draft on both straights; pass into T1/T8 with inside commitment, prioritize exits.
  • S Bleus: small lift, keep wheel open—speed comes from minimal scrub.
  • If understeer mid-chicane, pause throttle; don’t add lock.
  • Bias around 60% front; adjust a click forward if rear gets lively into T4/T13.
  • Track limits: T3/T10/T14 exits most likely for 1x—leave 10 cm margin.
  • Consistency goal: 2×5-lap runs within ±0.5 s, zero incidents before race.

Assumptions noted:

Series fixed; default weather; 14-turn numbering and corner names per common usage. If your session differs, adjust brake points by wind direction and your gearing by RPM/acceleration feel.
