Master Momentum and Survival at Circuit of the Americas - East
How to maximize consistency, safety, and maximizing exit speed for the Ray FF1600 (Formula Ford) at Circuit of the Americas - East.
November 8, 2025
1) TRACK SNAPSHOT
- Location & layout: Austin, Texas, USA. COTA – East configuration, clockwise. Length approx. 2.2–2.4 mi (3.5–3.9 km). Official turn count varies by numbering; in iRacing you’ll likely see GP numbering for common corners: T1, then T12–T20 (the Stadium).
- Character:
- Elevation: Big uphill into T1; gentle elevation through Stadium; downhill push into T19.
- Camber: Mixed. T1 has helpful uphill load but a flat apex; T12/15 are flat; T16–18 carousel has subtle camber changes that reward patience.
- Surface quirks: Generally smooth modern asphalt; grip builds with temp and rubber. Painted exit lines at T19/T20 can be slick.
- Curbs: Red/white serrated—low to medium height. Most are usable, but high-frequency serrations can unsettle a light FF1600 under throttle.
- Three corners that matter most for lap time:
- T20 (final left onto front straight): Your best lap starts here—commit to a clean, early throttle that carries speed all the way to T1.
- T12 (stadium hairpin entry): Sets up the Stadium rhythm; exit momentum pays through T13–T18 and into T19.
- T16–18 (triple-right carousel): Long-duration; any scrub or mid-corner lift destroys speed into T19. Patience and minimum-steer.
2) INCIDENT & TRACK-LIMIT HOTSPOTS (Rookie Priorities)
- T1 uphill hairpin: Lap 1 chaos magnet. Divebombs common. Easy 1x off on wide exit. Brake earlier than you think; prioritize straight exits.
- Connector to T12 (short chute): Rejoins can be awkward; stay predictable. Don’t turn across traffic if you’ve compromised exit from the link.
- T12 hairpin: Huge passing zone. Out-braking attempts often overshoot wide into the runoff; 1x off if you miss apex by 2+ car widths.
- T13–T15: Slow, fiddly. Late apexes required; inside curb hops can rotate car into oversteer. Beware rear stepping out under trail.
- T16–T18 carousel: Long right; track limits on exit if you run out of road. Stay disciplined with throttle and steering; avoid drifting four wheels beyond kerb.
- T19 fast left: Very high 1x rate on exit and on the painted outer edge. Lift early, commit once. Don’t add throttle while adding steering.
- T20 final left: Easy to run wide over the exit line for a 1x; also common to lock inside front on entry.
- Pit entry/exit:
- Entry: Right side after T20. Speed line is near pit entry commitment cone—don’t brake late while angled. Get it slowed in a straight line.
- Exit: Long blend on right of main straight. Stay right of blend line until it ends. Traffic on hot laps is closing fast up to T1—eyes up, mirrors, relative timing.
3) RACECRAFT PLAN (Ray FF1600)
- Drafting zones and clean passing spots:
- Front straight → T1: Best pass zone. Prefer inside (left) into T1. Sell a fake then square the late apex to prioritize exit if you can’t clear.
- Short chute to T12: Strong slipstream. Inside (right) into T12 is preferred. Brake in a straight line; avoid overslowing or sailing deep.
- T19/T20 combo: Only pass if you’re clearly alongside before turn-in—otherwise you’ll both compromise exits.
- Defensive lines that don’t kill exit speed:
- T1: Half-defend (mid-track) and late apex. Don’t park it on the apex; you need a clean drive away.
- T12: Move once to cover inside; brake inboard but release to a very late apex to protect exit.
- T20: Hold center-right and rotate late; force attacker to the dirty outside.
- Start/first‑lap survival:
- Brake 20–30 m earlier into T1 and T12 on Lap 1.
- Expect stack-ups mid-Stadium (T13–T15). Keep distance; look through the car ahead.
- Safe escapes: T1 has ample runoff straight ahead; use it if needed rather than pinballing. T12 runoff also safe—rejoin parallel to race line.
4) DRIVING LINE & MARKERS (Corner-by-corner)
Note: Numbering follows commonly shared GP labels where applicable.
| T# | Name | Priority* | Approach Ref | Brake Point | Trail? | Apex Type | Min Speed (rookie target) | Throttle On | Exit Trackout | Kerb Use | Risk/Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Turn 1 Hairpin (uphill L) | High | Left wall/100m board | ~100–120 m | Yes, gentle | Late, tight | 35–40 mph (56–64 kph) | At/just after apex | Full left edge | Light inside kerb ok | Lap 1 divebombs; don’t pinch exit—1x wide |
| Link | Connector to Stadium | Med | Stay right, sight link apex | Small lift or brush brake | Minimal | Late | 65–75 mph | Early, smooth | Mid-right | Avoid big kerb | Keep car settled for T12 |
| 12 | Hairpin Right | High | Right-side 150/100 boards | ~110–130 m | Yes, longer | Very late | 35–40 mph | When straight | Full left edge | Inside kerb mild | Huge pass zone; don’t overslow |
| 13 | Left Kink (slow) | Med | Left entry, sight apex paint | Light brush | Feather trail | Late | 45–50 mph | Feather, build | Use right edge | Avoid high kerb | Don’t early-apex; sets T14 |

| 15 | Tight Left | Med | Left, look long | ~60–70 m | Yes | Late, square | 40–45 mph | After rotation | Full right | Inside kerb ok | Don’t gas early—understeer kills |
| 16 | Right (start of carousel) | High | Right, prep long arc | Small brush if needed | Light, long | Late/long | 60–65 mph | Maintenance | Build to full | Skim | Set balance for 17–18 |
| 17 | Right (carousel cont.) | High | Follow arc | No brake | N/A | Late/float | 60–65 mph | Slight lift if push | Full left by exit | Skim | Patience; don’t add steering on throttle |
| 18 | Right (carousel exit) | High | Commit to exit | No brake | N/A | Late/float | 60–65 mph | Full once straight | Full left | Avoid outer kerb bump | Keep scrub minimal |
| 19 | Fast Left | Med | Right-side kerb, look through | Confidence lift | No | Late and shallow | 70–80 mph | Early but smooth | Full right | Avoid outer paint | Big 1x zone on exit |
| 20 | Final Left onto straight | High | Right, align car straight | ~80–90 m | Yes | Very late | 35–40 mph | As soon as straight | Full right edge | Minimal | Exit defines lap; don’t chase apex too early |
(*Priority = effect on next straight: High/Med/Low)
5) BRAKING & GEARS (Rookie Baselines)
- First laps: conservative references
- T1: Brake at 120 m from 4th → 2nd. Release calmly up the hill; car gains grip due to gradient—don’t over-slow.
- T12: 120–130 m from 4th → 2nd. Long, smooth trail into a very late apex; aim to straighten before throttle.
- T15: ~70 m from 3rd → 2nd. Square off slightly; don’t turn and brake too hard simultaneously.
- T20: ~85–90 m from 3rd → 2nd. Finish most braking before turn-in, then trail to apex.
- T16–18: Usually 3rd or 4th with minimal/no braking—modulate with a lift and balance the car.
- Brake release notes: Favor long, gentle trail into the tight corners (T1, T12, T15, T20) to help rotation in a no‑downforce car.
- Mid‑stint adjustments:
- If fronts overheat/understeer: Brake a touch earlier, release longer; slightly later apex.
- If rears go light/oversteer under trail: Shift bias forward 1–2% and shorten trail duration.
- Gears (assumed 4-speed): Hairpins in 2nd; medium corners in 3rd; straights in 4th. Validate by:
- Over‑rev check on straights (don’t bounce the limiter).
- Delta test: If 3rd in a hairpin keeps you bogged, use 2nd; if 2nd spins the tires, short-shift to 3rd early.
6) CAR CONTROL CUES (Momentum Car Emphasis)
- Rotate the car with brake release and light lifts, not big steering angles. The Ray FF rewards a gentle, extended trail to a late apex at T1, T12, T20.
- Steering discipline: Unwind as early as possible. In T16–18, lock in a shallow arc and avoid sawing—every degree adds scrub.
- Throttle application:
- T1/T12/T20: Wait for rotation, then commit decisively—squeezing, not stabbing.
- T16–18: Maintenance throttle to hold balance; add slowly as steering unwinds.
- T19: Single confidence lift, set the nose, then smooth throttle—avoid adding gas while increasing steering.
7) CURBING, BUMPS & SURFACE CHANGES
- Attack: Light clip at T1 inside; mild use at T12/T15 inside if it helps rotation; gentle skims through T16–18 inside paint acceptable when stable.
- Avoid: Large, sawtooth segments that bounce the FF on throttle exits (especially T18 outer and T19/T20 exits). Painted outer lines can be slick—respect them.
- Camber helpers: Uphill into T1 helps braking stability; use slightly deeper trail. Subtle positive camber within T16–18 rewards a late, patient line.
8) SETUP / DRIVER ADJUSTMENTS
- FIXED assumed.
- Driver adjustments:
- Brake bias start: 58–60% front. If locking fronts into T1/T12, move rearward 1%; if loose on entry, move forward 1–2%.
- Starting tire pressures: Use series fixed. Expect pressures to stabilize after 2 laps—don’t judge balance on Lap 1.
- FFB: Aim for clipping-free on the uphill into T1; if kerb hits cause spikes, reduce overall strength slightly for clarity.
9) TELEMETRY & METRICS TO TRACK
- Sector breakdown (suggested):
- S1: Start/Finish → T1 exit.
- S2: Link → T12 exit.
- S3: T13 → T20 line.
- Rookie targets:
- Min speeds (ballpark): T1 35–40 mph; T12 35–40 mph; T16–18 60–65 mph.
- Consistency: Aim for ±0.3–0.5 s lap variance over a 5‑lap run with zero 1x.
- Traces to inspect:
- Brake: Smooth tapering release into T1/T12/T20 (no “stair-steps”).
- Throttle: No stabs; look for a single, progressive application.
- Steering: Avoid saturation (flat-topped steering trace). Earlier unwind = faster exits.
10) PRACTICE PLAN (45 minutes)
- 0–10 min: Out‑lap + marker hunt
- Find reliable brake boards for T1, T12, T20; test a conservative +20 m margin.
- Success: Zero 1x; hit each marker twice consistently.
- 10–25 min: Corner families focus
- Slow hairpins (T1/T12/T20): Late apex and earliest clean throttle.
- Long-duration (T16–18): Minimize scrub; stable arc.
- Log min speeds at the three key corners.
- Success: Improve each min-speed by 1–2 mph without adding incidents.
- 25–35 min: 2×5‑lap race-pace runs
- Aim for consistency; no 1x; clean traffic management.
- Success: Variance within ±0.5 s per run.
- 35–40 min: Pit in/out drills
- Hit pit entry at pace; no speeding; obey blend line on exit.
- Success: Two clean cycles.
- 40–45 min: Draft practice + cool-down
- Try one pass into T1 or T12 from draft; then a cool-down lap focusing on smoothness.
- Success: One clean, non-contact draft pass.
11) QUICK CHECKLIST (pre‑race)
- Brake bias start point: 59% front (adjust ±1–2% to taste).
- First‑lap brake margins: +25 m at T1, +20 m at T12.
- Two “free time” fixes:
- Look to the exit cone at turn-in—your hands will follow, reducing mid-corner scrub.
- One clean, decisive throttle application per corner—no double pumps.
- Two safety traps to avoid:
- Sending a half‑gap dive at T1/T12—wait for a real overlap.
- Running wide on throttle at T19/T20—lift early, save the 1x.
- Fuel note: Pit stops typically not relevant for FF1600 sprints. For longer races, verify consumption in testing and carry +2 extra laps as buffer.
12) ONE‑PAGE SUMMARY
- Brake early, apex late at T1/T12/T20—exits win laps.
- Preserve momentum through T16–18—no extra steering, no mid-corner throttle spikes.
- T19: One confidence lift, respect exit limits.
- Defend center lines; prioritize exits over blocking into T1/T12.
- First two laps: +20–30 m braking, eyes up for stack-ups.
- Trail braking is your rotation tool; keep it smooth and long into hairpins.
- Use kerbs lightly; avoid big serrations and painted exits at T19/T20.
- Manage SR: Common 1x at T1, T12, T19, T20—give yourself a margin.
- Telemetry: Focus on brake release timing and minimum speeds at T1, T12, T16–18.
- Consistency goal: Zero 1x over a 5‑lap run at race pace, ±0.5 s variance.
