Master Momentum and Survival at Circuit of the Americas - West

How to maximize consistency, safety, and maximizing exit speed for the Ray FF1600 (Formula Ford) at Circuit of the Americas - West.

November 8, 2025

1) TRACK SNAPSHOT

  • Location & layout: Austin, Texas, clockwise. Assumption: West layout ≈ 2.3 mi / 3.7 km. Uses the uphill T1, the Esses (T2–T6), medium-speed S2 (T7–T10), T11 hairpin, connector to the stadium, then T19–T20 to the front straight. Official GP has 20 turns; West effectively uses GP T1–T11 plus T19–T20 (≈ 13 effective turns).
  • Character:
    • Elevation: Big uphill braking into T1; small crests through T9–T10; downhill compressions help grip at several apexes.
    • Camber: Helpful positive camber at T1 and T11 hairpins; mostly neutral through the Esses.
    • Surface quirks: Braking bumps into T1 and T11 (modest in the FF1600 but noticeable under heavy trail). The Esses have painted curbs with some serration.
    • Curbs: Red/white are generally usable but inner “sausage”/bananas on some apexes should be avoided; they can bounce the FF1600 and scrub speed.
  • Three corners that matter most for lap time:
    1. T6 (end of the Esses) — Exit speed sets the run to T7–T10 and into T11.
    2. T11 (hairpin left) — Critical for the acceleration segment toward the connector; poor exit kills speed for a long time.
    3. T20 (final left) — Last chance to bank momentum onto the front straight and across the line.

2) INCIDENT & TRACK-LIMIT HOTSPOTS (Rookie Priorities)

  • T1 exit (left hairpin): Easy to overrun the exit and grab a 1x; also common for first-lap divebombs. Keep tight on exit when traffic is near.
  • T3–T6 Esses: Cutting inside apexes or running too wide on exits triggers 1x/slowdowns. Keep at least two wheels on the curb/track. Smooth, single-input steering.
  • T9–T10 crest: Car lightens; over-ambitious throttle or curb strike can push you wide into a 1x.
  • T11 hairpin entry: Trail-brake over bumps; locking inside front leads to a wide, 1x-prone exit.
  • T19 exit: Invites wide track-out and frequent 1x. Set up T20; don’t chase last mph through T19 if it kills T20.
  • Pit exit: Blends on the right near T1 uphill. Stay right of the blend line; do not cut across the racing line into T1.
  • Pit entry: After T20; the pit entry is on the right. The speed-limit line arrives sooner than you think when you commit — be slowed and tight right early.
  • “Don’t turn across traffic” warnings:
    • Rejoins after T1 or T11 — stay off the racing line until fully up to speed.
    • T20 spins tend to roll across the track — hold brakes and wait; traffic is blind over the crest from T19.

3) RACECRAFT PLAN (Ray FF1600)

  • Drafting zones:
    • Front straight (T20 → T1): Best slipstream opportunity. Plan passes to the inside into T1.
    • T6 → T11 run: Moderate draft; a setup move into T11 works if you exit T6 clean and close.
  • Clean passing spots:
    • T1 inside: Brake straight, commit to late apex, square the exit. Don’t wash wide into opponents.
    • T11 inside: Classic out‑brake; protect the exit to avoid repass.
    • T20 inside: Low risk if set up from T19; prioritize exit to avoid a crossback.
  • Defensive lines that preserve exit:
    • T1: Hold mid-to-inside on entry, release to a late apex; compromise minimal.
    • T11: Tight defensive entry, open hands early and prioritize a straight exit.
    • T20: Hug inside, rotate on minimal slip, and launch — avoid over-slowing.
  • Start/first-lap survival:
    • Brake +25–40 m earlier for T1; expect late dives center-right. Escape route: straightline deeper and slow more, don’t turn across traffic.
    • Through T3–T6: Single‑file discipline, lift instead of double-turning; minor patience here avoids big multi-car offs.
    • T11 first lap: Brake earlier and centered; people spin on trail. Give space and square the exit for drive.

4) DRIVING LINE & MARKERS (Corner-by-corner)

Assumption: Using GP numbers present in the West loop (T1–T11, T19–T20).

5) BRAKING & GEARS (Rookie Baselines)

  • First laps:
    • T1: Brake at ~130–110 m uphill. 3rd → 2nd. Long, gentle trail to lock the nose, rotate late.
    • T11: ~125–110 m. 3rd → 2nd. Progressive trail; avoid snap over-rotation.
    • T20: ~100–90 m. 3rd → 2nd. Smooth trail; eyes on exit.
    • T3–T6: Mostly 3rd (or 4th if final drive suits). Use lifts/brushes; no hard braking.
    • T19: Small lift/brush, stay in 4th if the car pulls; otherwise 3rd short-shift exit.
    • Brake release: Prioritize a long, tapered release into T1/T11/T20 to rotate without scrubbing.
  • Mid‑stint adjustments:
    • If brakes/tires warm, move bias rearward by 0.5–1.0% to aid rotation; brake 5–10 m earlier in heat or tailwind.
    • As rubber builds in the Esses, carry 1–2 mph more, but avoid extra steering angle.
  • Gears (assumption for Ray FF1600 4‑speed):
    • Hairpins (T1/T11/T20): 2nd.
    • Esses and medium: 3rd; T10/T19 may reach 4th.
    • Validate by delta: If engine falls flat in 3rd through T6, upshift earlier; if over-revving in 2nd at hairpins, short-shift on exit.

6) CAR CONTROL CUES (Momentum Car Emphasis)

  • Rotation:
    • Use gentle trail braking to point the nose in hairpins (T1/T11/T20). In the Esses, lift to rotate rather than brake — keeps platform flat and speed up.
  • Steering discipline:
    • Single, clean arcs through T3–T6. If you add steering mid-corner, you’re scrubbing. Use small lifts to adjust instead.
  • Throttle application:
    • Hairpins: Squeeze as soon as the wheel opens. If you need more steering, you’re too early on throttle.
    • Fast corners (T19): Early but measured throttle; avoid snapping understeer that kills T20.

7) CURBING, BUMPS & SURFACE CHANGES

  • Curbs to attack:
    • T3–T6 red/white are usable with two wheels; keep off inner sausage/bananas.
    • T19 outside exit curb is usable but don’t drop too far; 1x risk.
  • Curbs to avoid:
    • T1/T11 inside sausage curbs; they’ll hop the FF1600 and stall rotation.
  • Bumps/camber:
    • T1 and T11 have mild braking bumps; extend initial brake zone and trail smoothly.
    • Positive camber in T1/T11 helps rotation and exit grip — use late apexes.
    • T9–T10 crest lightens the car; be gentle on inputs.

8) SETUP / DRIVER ADJUSTMENTS

  • FIXED (assumed): Focus on in‑car/driving adjustments.
    • Brake bias: Start ~59% front. Adjust ±1% for balance (more rear to rotate, more front for stability).
    • Tires: Give them a lap to come in; the FF1600 rewards gradual heat build.
    • FFB: Avoid clipping in compressions; set strength so you can feel front grip fall-off in the Esses.
  • If OPEN (if your league/event):
    • Baseline philosophy: Prioritize platform stability and mechanical grip.
    • Pressures: Target hot 24–25 psi (assumption; use garage notes if specified).
    • Camber: Moderate negative front to aid front bite; avoid overheating inner shoulders.
    • Toe: Small front toe‑out (0.5–1.0 mm total) for turn‑in; rear near zero for stability.
    • Brake bias window: 58–60%.
    • ARBs/diff: Keep soft/mechanical for mechanical grip; neutral diff coast for predictable lift rotation.

9) TELEMETRY & METRICS TO TRACK

  • Sectors (suggested):
    • S1: S/F → T6 exit (T1 + Esses execution).
    • S2: T7 → T11 exit (mid-speed rhythm + hairpin exit).
    • S3: Connector → T19/T20 → S/F (final rhythm + launch).
  • Rookie targets:
    • T6 min: 60–65 mph.
    • T11 min: 38–42 mph with early throttle.
    • T20 min: 42–48 mph with clean launch.
    • Lap variance: Aim ±0.5 s over a 5‑lap run with 0x.
  • Traces to inspect:
    • Brake release at T1/T11/T20: Smooth taper aligning with max steering.
    • Throttle pickup: Small delay until steering unwinds; zero spikes.
    • Steering saturation: If flat‑lined high through the Esses, you’re scrubbing — reduce entry speed and use lift to rotate.

10) PRACTICE PLAN (45 minutes)

  • 0–10 min: Out‑lap + references
    • Objectives: Find brake boards at T1/T11/T20; confirm pit in/out lines; bring tires up gently.
    • Success: No 1x; note three reliable brake landmarks.
  • 10–25 min: Corner families
    • Focus: T6 exit (flow), T11 exit (launch), T20 exit (launch).
    • Do 3×3‑lap mini-runs; log min speeds at those corners.
    • Success: Hit target mins within ±2 mph and consistent exits.
  • 25–35 min: 2×5‑lap race-pace runs
    • Objectives: Zero 1x, ±0.5 s lap variance, clean traffic management.
    • Success: Both runs clean; variance achieved.
  • 35–40 min: Pit practice
    • Objectives: Enter at pace without speeding; clean pit exit respecting the blend.
    • Success: 3 flawless entries and 3 safe exits.
  • 40–45 min: Draft practice + cool down
    • If cars around: Practice T1/T11 set‑ups with safe lifts. Otherwise run one cool‑down lap focusing on smoothness.

11) QUICK CHECKLIST (pre‑race)

  • Brake bias start point: 59% front (adjust ±1% as tires warm).
  • First‑lap brake margins: +25–40 m at T1, +15–20 m at T11.
  • Two “free time” fixes:
    • Soften hands through the Esses; one clean arc with micro lifts.
    • Late apex T20 and fire straight; don’t chase T19 speed if it hurts T20.
  • Two safety traps to avoid:
    • Do not cross the pit-exit blend into T1 traffic.
    • Don’t rejoin across the racing line after a T1/T11 off — hold brakes, rejoin parallel.
  • Fuel note: Assumption — No stop needed for official FF1600 races. If fueling is required, estimate ~0.12 gal (0.45 L) per lap and add a 2‑lap buffer.

12) ONE‑PAGE SUMMARY

  • Brake earlier and trail longer into T1/T11/T20; rotate the car with the brake, not steering.
  • The end of the Esses (T6) is your lap-time gate — protect that exit speed.
  • In the Esses, lift to rotate; avoid extra steering that scrubs mph.
  • Defend inside at T1/T11 without killing the exit; late apex to launch.
  • T19 is a setup corner — small lift, keep it tidy to prioritize T20 exit.
  • Respect track limits: T1 exit, T3–T6 edges, T9–T10 crest, and T19 exit.
  • Pit exit: Stay right of the blend near T1; pit entry: commit early and tight right.
  • Brake bias ~59% to start; nudge rearward as grip builds for rotation.
  • Rookie targets: T6 60–65 mph; T11 38–42 mph; T20 42–48 mph; lap variance ±0.5 s, 0x.
  • First‑lap survival: +25–40 m earlier for T1, +15–20 m for T11; leave space in the Esses — no double‑moves.
