Master Momentum and Survival at Circuito de Navarra - Grand Prix
How to maximize consistency, safety, and maximizing exit speed for the Ray FF1600 (Formula Ford) at Circuito de Navarra - Grand Prix.
November 8, 2025
1) TRACK SNAPSHOT
- Location & layout: Los Arcos, Spain. Grand Prix layout ~3.93 km (2.44 mi), clockwise, official turn count: 15 (assumption consistent with common references).
- Character:
- Flow: Mix of heavy-brake hairpins, medium-speed complexes, and one long, loaded carousel. Low aero means mechanical grip and momentum management matter.
- Camber/elevation: Mild overall. Some helpful camber in long right-handers; a few off-camber exits punish early throttle.
- Surface/curbs: Generally modern surface with decent grip; exit curbs range from flat to moderately tall. Avoid any yellow “sausage” deterrents. T1/T15 exits invite greedy track-out 1x.
- Three corners that matter most for lap time:
- T15 Final Right: Exit onto the main straight; every km/h gained at exit echoes for the full straight.
- T5 Long Right Carousel: Longest sustained lateral load; preserving mid-corner speed without scrubbing is critical.
- T1 Hairpin: Heaviest brake zone, biggest pass zone; clean exit sets up the early lap rhythm.
2) INCIDENT & TRACK-LIMIT HOTSPOTS (Rookie Priorities)
- T1 hairpin (heavy-brake): Divebombs, rear lockups, and pinched apexes cause contacts. Brake earlier on Lap 1 and leave car-width on exit.
- T2–T3 change of direction: Over-attack leads to track-out 1x or side-by-side rub. Patience—set up T3 exit.
- T5 long right: Rear steps on trail or throttle-lift over-rotation; off-track if you wash wide. Keep hands calm and throttle steady.
- Mid-lap chicane/esses (assumed T7–T8): Sausage curbs can bounce the Ray; 1x/slowdowns if you shortcut.
- T10/T11 tighter complex: Inside curbs can unsettle; slowdowns if you cut too much; wheel-to-wheel squeeze risk.
- T15 final right: Late off-throttle snaps; greedy exit track-out 1x; wall or pit wall proximity if you’re offline.
- Grass/astro beyond exits: Especially T1, T5, T15—low car ride height + curbs can drag you wide into a 1x.
- Safe rejoin guidance:
- From T1 runoff: Rejoin parallel to traffic flow on far right; do not cut diagonally back to apex.
- From T5/T15 off: Stay offline on the outside until full control, then rejoin after a mirror check.
- Pit entry/exit gotchas (assumptions):
- Pit entry: Stay right on approach to the final corner; white line begins near/after T15—commit early and do not swerve across traffic.
- Pit exit: Long blend on right side of T1 straight; remain right of blend line through T1 approach, only merge when clear.
3) RACECRAFT PLAN (Ray FF1600)
- Drafting zones:
- Main straight (T15 exit to T1): Prime slipstream; time the pull-out at 2/3 down the straight. Prefer inside into T1.
- Short back straights between medium corners (T4–T5 entry, T11–T15 approach): Smaller effect but useful for closing.
- Clean passing spots:
- T1: Standard out-brake on inside—commit early, square the car, protect exit.
- T5 carousel entry: Force an early defensive line from the car ahead and cross over mid-corner to exit inside.
- T10: Medium/heavy brake—sell a dummy to outside, cut back inside on exit.
- Defensive lines that don’t kill exits:
- T1: Slightly late apex from middle-right. Do not park the apex—roll speed to defend the drag to T3.
- T15: Narrow entry, late apex; keep throttle smooth to not hand over a huge draft.
- Start/first-lap survival:
- Brake +20–30 m earlier at T1 and trail less. Expect 3-wide into T1; choose the “escape lane” outside and focus on your exit.
- Settle the car through T5—lift earlier rather than correcting a snap.
- If boxed in at T15, breathe out and maximize exit—not worth a last-corner lunge.

Notes: Speeds are rookie targets in clean air; adjust with wind and rubber. “Assumed” S-bends location may differ slightly in naming/numbering across guides.
5) BRAKING & GEARS (Rookie Baselines)
- Gearing (starting point for Ray FF1600):
- T1: 2nd
- T3/T4: 3rd
- T5: 3rd (hold)
- T7–T8: 3rd
- T9: 3rd
- T10: 2nd
- T11: 3rd
- T12: 4th lift
- T13: 3rd or 4th (test both; 4th can be cleaner if over-rev in 3rd)
- T15: 3rd
- First laps: brake references and technique
- T1: 130–150 m, straight-line decel, then gentle trail into apex. Avoid stabbing brakes—thin tires lock easily.
- T5: Small brush to set nose, long maintenance trail to keep rotation.
- T10: 100–120 m, clear release before apex to prevent inside-front lock.
- T15: 80–100 m, soft-but-long trail—prioritize exit.
- Mid‑stint adjustments:
- As tires warm and track rubbers in, bring brake points 5–10 m deeper. If rear starts to float, add +0.5–1.0% front brake bias.
- Validating gears:
- Watch delta: If a higher gear yields equal or better exit with less wheelspin and better straight speed, stick with it.
- Over‑rev flags: If you touch limiter long before apex, upshift earlier or choose the taller gear.
- Engine pull: If car bogs on exit, use the lower gear but manage wheelspin.
6) CAR CONTROL CUES (Momentum Car Emphasis)
- Rotation method: Prefer light trail brake to rotate at T1, T5, T10, T15. In fast bends (T12–T13), use a brief lift to set the nose rather than braking.
- Steering discipline: Aim for minimal, progressive steering. Any extra lock = scrub = lost kph. Unwind early at T5 and T15 to free speed.
- Throttle patterns:
- Squeeze early but gently; keep it increasing. Avoid on/off spikes that unsettle the rear.
- In long corners (T5/T13), hold a small steady throttle once balanced; add as you unwind.
7) CURBING, BUMPS & SURFACE CHANGES
- Curbs to use:
- Exit curbs at T3, T4, T11, T15 are generally safe if you’re straightening the wheel.
- Flat red/white curbs in fast kinks (T6, T12, T14) are fine with mild load.
- Curbs to avoid:
- Any yellow “sausage” curbs in the esses (T7–T8) and inner apexes of T5/T13—risk of bounce and 1x/slowdown.
- Bumps/camber:
- T1 inside has minor ripples—trail lightly.
- T5 offers mild positive camber mid-corner; use it to carry speed but don’t drop inside wheels onto the painted seam.
- T15 apex has a sharper curb edge—touch, don’t climb.
8) SETUP / DRIVER ADJUSTMENTS
- FIXED assumed: focus on driving.
- Driver adjustments:
- Brake bias start: 58–59% forward. If rear wiggles under braking, +0.5–1% forward; if front locks, step back to ~57%.
- Tire pressures: Use series default; focus on not sliding early to prevent overheating.
- FFB: Avoid clipping; set strength so heavy-brake zones don’t hit the stop. Light car = high detail—don’t oversoften.
9) TELEMETRY & METRICS TO TRACK
- Sectors (example split plan):
- S1: Start/Finish to exit T4 (T1 heavy brake + early rhythm)
- S2: T5 to exit T11 (carousel + mid-lap complexes)
- S3: T12 to finish (sweepers + final corner)
- Rookie targets (clean air):
- T5 min speed: 95–105 km/h
- T13 min speed: 110–120 km/h
- T15 min speed: 85–95 km/h with no exit scrub
- Lap variance goal: ±0.3–0.5 s over a 5-lap run without 1x.
- What to inspect on traces:
- Brake release vs steering: Aim for overlap, not gap or spike.
- Throttle pickup delay: Too late = lost momentum; too early = corrective lift later.
- Steering saturation: Long flat-topped steering traces = scrub; reduce entry speed or release earlier.
10) PRACTICE PLAN (45 minutes)
- 0–10 min: Out‑lap + references
- Find brake boards for T1, T10, T15; feel curbs at T3, T11, T15.
- Success: 0 offs, stable temps, three clear braking references noted.
- 10–25 min: Corner families
- Focus T5, T13, T15. Run sets of laps aiming for min-speed consistency and early-but-clean throttle.
- Log min speeds; prioritize exit quality over absolute entry speed.
- Success: Min-speed variance ≤5 km/h at each key corner.
- 25–35 min: 2×5‑lap race-pace runs
- Drive at 95% pace, no 1x, manage traffic ghosts.
- Success: Each 5-lap run within ±0.5 s spread; zero incidents.
- 35–40 min: Pit in/out
- Practice pit entry line at T15 and blend at T1 without speeding.
- Success: Two clean pit cycles, no penalties.
- 40–45 min: Draft practice + cool‑down
- If possible, follow a car for two laps; practice T1 pass timing.
- Success: One clean draft overtake attempt (or simulation using ghost/delta).
11) QUICK CHECKLIST (pre‑race)
- Brake bias start point: 58% (adjust ±1% to taste).
- First‑lap brake margins: +20–30 m at T1; +10–15 m at T15.
- Two “free time” fixes:
- Look to the exit early at T15—unwind sooner for less scrub.
- In T5, hold a tiny maintenance throttle instead of coasting.
- Two safety traps to avoid:
- Do not climb sausage curbs in the esses.
- Don’t cut back across traffic on T1 exit—stay predictable.
- Fuel note: Races typically non-stop in Ray FF1600. As a baseline, plan ~1.0–1.2 L/lap; for a 15-lap race carry ~18–20 L total to be safe (assumption; confirm in sim).
12) ONE‑PAGE SUMMARY
- Brake early and straight for T1; late apex, defend exit.
- Preserve momentum at T5/T13—small steering, steady throttle.
- T15 is the lap: prioritize a clean, early throttle and free exit.
- Avoid sausage curbs; skim flat curbs only when the wheel is straight.
- Use the draft on the main straight; commit to inside T1 passes early.
- Defensive lines: narrow in, late apex; never park mid-corner.
- Trail brake to rotate in slow/medium corners; lift-set in fast ones.
- Start with 58% brake bias; add more front if the rear moves under braking.
- Aim for ±0.5 s 5-lap consistency with zero incidents before pushing.
- First two laps: leave space, lift early in packs, survive the midfield chaos.
