Master Momentum and Survival at Lime Rock Park - West Bend Chicane

How to maximize consistency, safety, and maximizing exit speed for the Ray FF1600 (Formula Ford) at Lime Rock Park - West Bend Chicane.

November 8, 2025

1) TRACK SNAPSHOT

  • Location & layout: Lakeville, Connecticut. Length ~1.53 mi / 2.46 km. Clockwise. Official turn count varies by config; we’ll use 8 turns here: T1–T2 Big Bend (double right), T3–T4 The Esses (L–R), T5 Uphill (R), T6–T7 West Bend Chicane (L–R), T8 The Downhill (R).
  • Character:
    • Elevation: Big compressions at Uphill and The Downhill. The chicane flattens the pace before The Downhill.
    • Camber: Helpful positive camber at Big Bend and The Downhill; neutral to slight off-camber at parts of The Esses.
    • Surface quirks: Micro-bumps under heavy braking into T1; Uphill curb/crest can bounce the car; chicane curbs are tall/abrasive.
    • Curbs: Low-to-moderate elsewhere, but tall “sausage” style at the West Bend Chicane — ride the flat paint only.
  • Three corners that matter most for lap time:
    1. T8 The Downhill: Exit to the longest straight; huge lap-time weight.
    2. T6–T7 West Bend Chicane exit: Prepares The Downhill; must be squared early to be flat or near-flat into T8.
    3. T5 Uphill: Carrying speed onto No Name Straight matters in a momentum car.

2) INCIDENT & TRACK-LIMIT HOTSPOTS (Rookie Priorities)

  • Big Bend (T1–T2): Lap 1 accordion. Out-braking, rear taps, and outside off-tracks. Brake early; double apex to stay off the marbles on exit.
  • Esses exit (T4): Running wide over the right-side curb -> 1x/grass. Keep hands calm and leave a tire width.
  • Uphill exit (T5): Outside drop wheels on the left over crest -> 1x/spin risk. Commit to throttle only if straight.
  • West Bend Chicane cuts (T6–T7): Over-attack inside sausages -> big bounce, 1x or slowdown. Use paint, avoid big yellow curb.
  • Chicane exit wall/grass: Early throttle with steering lock -> push to right-side exit curb/grass, compromising T8.
  • The Downhill exit (T8): Classic 1x and big offs at outside curb/grass. Open hands early and accept a small lift if needed.
  • Pit exit blend: Merging near T1 is blind for cars on the racing line. Stay right of the blend line until it ends.
  • Safe rejoins: If off at T8, rejoin at pit exit if safer rather than crossing the racing line. If wide at T5, use the left apron and rejoin parallel to traffic on No Name Straight. Do not U-turn across traffic at chicane exits.
  • Pit entry/exit gotchas:
    • Entry: After T8, stay hard right; the pit commitment is early. Don’t cut across the track from mid-exit.
    • Exit: Stay right of the blend line until past Big Bend entry; traffic approaches fast and often uses the right for T1 defense.

3) RACECRAFT PLAN (Ray FF1600)

  • Drafting zones:
    • Front straight (T8 to T1): Prime spot. Use a half-car offset and commit early to the inside for T1.
    • No Name Straight (T4 to T5): Smaller draft, sets pressure for a T6–T7 move.
  • Clean passing spots:
    • T1 Big Bend (preferred inside): Brake a touch earlier and hold a late apex. Don’t wash out wide into the second apex.
    • T6 Chicane (preferred inside): Small feint right then commit left; brake straight, rotate early to protect the T7 exit.
  • Defensive lines:
    • T1: Center-right defend; brake straight; tight, patient double apex. Don’t park it mid-corner—keep an exit.
    • T6: Mid-track entry reduces dive-bomb risk; prioritize squaring up for T7 exit and T8 commitment.
  • Start/first-lap survival:
    • Brake +20–30 m earlier into T1; leave a lane outside.
    • Expect lifts in The Esses. Avoid pinching three-wide into T5.
    • At chicane, favor safety: brake straight, avoid inside sausage. If boxed-in, sacrifice T6 entry to ensure a strong T7 exit.
    • Safe escapes: Use the inside apron at T1 or the runoff beyond T1 apex; at T8, aim for pit entry rather than cutting back into traffic.

5) BRAKING & GEARS (Rookie Baselines)

  • First laps:
    • T1 Big Bend: Brake at ~175 ft (between 200–150 boards). 3rd to 2nd. Firm initial, then long trail to rotate; hold the car tight to avoid overspeeding the second apex.
    • T3–T4 Esses: Typically 3rd. Small lift/brush only; prioritize stability and exit positioning.
    • T5 Uphill: 3rd. Short brush of brake pre-turn or a controlled lift; rotate early and commit throttle over crest only when straight.
    • T6–T7 Chicane: 3rd to 2nd. Brake at ~100 m (adjust ±10 m for temps). Linear initial, then tidy trail to square the R-hander exit.
    • T8 Downhill: 3rd, likely upshift to 4th just after apex onto the straight. If in doubt, lift slightly for safety and open the hands early.
  • Mid‑stint adjustments:
    • As tires come in, move T1 and Chicane braking ~5–10 m later.
    • In heat/fade, go back 5 m earlier; lengthen trail and accept slightly lower minimums.
  • Gearing validation:
    • If the engine won’t pull on exit (bogging), downshift earlier or carry slightly more entry speed.
    • If over-rev before apex, short-shift; watch delta splits. Use the longest gear that still lets you accelerate out.

6) CAR CONTROL CUES (Momentum Car Emphasis)

  • Rotation method: Use gentle trail braking to rotate at T1, T6–T7. Elsewhere (T3–T5, T8) prefer lift-to-rotate rather than brake to protect momentum.
  • Steering-angle discipline: Unwind early at T2, T7, T8—scrub kills FF1600 speed. If the wheel is still cranked, you’re applying throttle too soon.
  • Throttle patterns:
    • Maintenance throttle between T1’s two apexes.
    • Commit early and smoothly at T5 once straight.
    • Delay throttle at T6 until you can square T7; then clean, early throttle to set up a confident T8.

7) CURBING, BUMPS & SURFACE CHANGES

  • Attack:
    • T1/T2 inside paint lightly; small exit curb OK if flat.
    • T7 exit curb: helpful if you’re straight—don’t hit it with steering lock.
  • Avoid:
    • T6/T7 sausage curbs—slowdowns and bounces.
    • T5 inside curb if it unsettles the car over crest.
    • T8 outside curb overload—easy 1x or off.
  • Bumps/camber tricks:
    • T1 has supporting camber—trail longer and it will help you rotate.
    • T5 compression gives grip after the crest—time throttle slightly after initial rotation so the compression locks you in.
    • T8 positive camber—trust it if your hands are straight; small lift is cheaper than pinching the exit.

8) SETUP / DRIVER ADJUSTMENTS

  • FIXED: Driver adjustments
    • Brake bias: Start 59–61% forward. If rear gets lively into T1/T6, add +0.5–1.0% forward. If pushy, reduce 0.5%.
    • In-car (if available): Slightly higher bias for Lap 1; bring it back as tires warm.
    • Tire pressures: Follow fixed. Expect 1–2 laps to come in; don’t chase grip too early.
    • FFB: Avoid clipping over the Uphill/Downhill compressions; lower gain if oscillations on curbs.
  • If OPEN (assumption if needed): Conservative baseline
    • Pressures to mid-operating window; tiny front toe-out (0.5–1.0 mm total) for turn-in; neutral rear toe.
    • Modest front camber; avoid extremes—protect inside shoulders through T8.
    • Brake bias 60% ±1%.
    • Keep ride heights stable; don’t lower so much you strike chicane curbs.
    • ARBs/diff: Keep neutral for predictability; prioritize a car that rotates on trail but stays stable under throttle.

9) TELEMETRY & METRICS TO TRACK

  • Sector breakdown:
    • S1: T1–T2 Big Bend.
    • S2: T3–T5 Esses + Uphill.
    • S3: T6–T8 Chicane + Downhill + front straight.
  • Rookie targets (min speeds):
    • T5 Uphill: 60–65 mph.
    • T7 Chicane right: 38–42 mph, complete throttle by exit.
    • T8 Downhill: 80–85 mph with minimal lift.
  • Consistency goal: Lap variance ±0.3–0.5 s over a 10‑lap run; 0–1x total.
  • Telemetry checks:
    • Brake release timing at T1/T6: Smooth S-curve, no on/off spikes.
    • Throttle pickup delay at T7: Short and repeatable; earlier only if steering is straight.
    • Steering saturation: Avoid long periods >90° lock at T2/T8; indicates scrubbing speed.

10) PRACTICE PLAN (45 minutes)

  • 0–10 min: Out‑lap + references
    • Find 200/150 boards into T1; 150/100 into T6.
    • Warm tires progressively; no 1x. Success: clean laps, stable markers set.
  • 10–25 min: Corner families
    • Focus 10 min on T5/T8 exits; log min speeds and throttle points.
    • Then 5 min on T6–T7 brake/rotate/square. Success: hit target mins within ±2 mph, no sausage hits.
  • 25–35 min: 2×5‑lap race‑pace runs
    • Aim for zero incidents and ±0.5 s variance per run. Success: consistent times, repeatable brake points.
  • 35–40 min: Pit in/out practice
    • Enter clean from T8, no speeding. Exit staying right of blend line to past T1 entry. Success: 2 clean cycles.
  • 40–45 min: Draft practice + cool‑down
    • Practice T1 pass setup and T6 feint. Success: at least one clean pass attempt without 1x or contact. Cool car down after.

11) QUICK CHECKLIST (pre‑race)

  • Brake bias start point: 60% forward (adjust ±0.5–1% after Lap 2).
  • First‑lap brake margins: +25 m at T1, +15 m at T6.
  • Two “free time” fixes:
    • Square T7 before throttle—commit straight, earlier.
    • Open hands 1 beat earlier at T8 to reduce exit scrub.
  • Two safety traps to avoid:
    • Inside sausage curbs at T6–T7.
    • Crossing the pit-exit blend line near T1 or merging into traffic blindly.
  • Fuel note: Pit stops typically not relevant. If required, assumption ~0.35 L/lap (0.09 gal/lap). Race laps × per‑lap + 2 L (0.5 gal) buffer.

12) ONE‑PAGE SUMMARY

  • Brake early and trail long at T1; double apex without drifting wide.
  • Minimal inputs through The Esses; preserve momentum and set left-side entry for T5.
  • T5: short brush/lift, rotate early, throttle only when straight—carry onto No Name.
  • T6–T7: brake straight at ~100 m, avoid sausages, square the car and commit throttle early out of T7.
  • T8: small safety lift if needed; straighten hands early—front straight speed matters most.
  • Draft for T1 moves; defend center-right and late-apex—keep exits alive.
  • Lap 1: add big brake margins; expect stack-ups at T1 and the chicane.
  • Stay within track limits: T4 exit, T5 outside, T8 exit are your 1x hotspots.
  • Bias ~60% to start; nudge forward if rear feels lively into T1/T6.
  • Consistency > hero laps: target ±0.5 s variance and zero incidents over race distance.
