Master Momentum and Survival at Road America - Full Course

How to maximize consistency, safety, and maximizing exit speed for the Ray FF1600 (Formula Ford) at Road America - Full Course.

November 8, 2025

1) TRACK SNAPSHOT

  • Location & layout: Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, USA. Length 4.048 mi (6.515 km), clockwise, official 14 turns. Alternate numbering sometimes treats small kinks differently (T2/T4/T7).
  • Character:
    • Big elevation changes: uphill start/finish, downhill into T5, “Hurry Downs” to T8, Kettle Bottoms into Canada Corner.
    • Long straights reward exits from T3, Carousel (T9–T10), and T14.
    • Surface is generally smooth; some mild bumps under braking at T5 and on entries to T6/T12.
    • Camber: helpful positive camber at T5 and T12; T13 (Bill Mitchell Bend) feels a bit edgy/off‑camber at speed.
    • Curbs: Mostly medium/flat and usable at apex/exit, but the Kink (T11) inside curb is dangerous; many exits drop immediately to grass (1x risk).
  • Three corners that matter most for lap time (momentum emphasis):
    • T3 (right-hander before Moraine Sweep): Sets the longest downhill straight to T5.
    • Carousel (T9–T10): The quality of balance here dictates your speed through the Kink and down Kettle Bottoms.
    • T14 (final corner): Clean, early throttle up the hill drives S/F speed and often sets up T1 passes.

2) INCIDENT & TRACK-LIMIT HOTSPOTS (Rookie Priorities)

  • T1 exit: Running wide to the left for a 1x and/or drop-wheel; cold tires Lap 1 magnify it. Don’t over-slow mid-corner; late apex.
  • T3 exit: Easy to drift off the left edge; ruins the Moraine Sweep. Respect the exit curb limit.
  • T5 braking/inside stackups: Big downhill braking, cars ahead can check up more than expected; avoid turning across traffic on rejoin if you go wide. Use the escape road if needed.
  • T6 exit: Crest and mild camber change—outside 1x and snap oversteer possible.
  • T8 exit: Downhill approach, easy to carry too much and float wide left into a 1x/grass.
  • Carousel (T9–T10): Over-trying → front tire scrub → understeer to the exit; stay disciplined with steering angle.
  • Kink (T11): The most dangerous place—don’t touch the inside curb, and respect wind. Small lift is OK; damage isn’t.
  • Canada Corner (T12) braking and exit: Late-brake greed → straight-on; exit left 1x is common. Leave margin Lap 1–2.
  • Safe rejoin notes:
    • T5/T12: If you go deep, use the runoff; rejoin parallel to traffic flow, don’t U‑turn across the line.
    • Kink: If off, stay off and slow down safely—do not shoot back across the track.
  • Pit entry/exit gotchas:
    • Pit entry: Far right after T14; commit early and stay predictable. iRacing pit speed limit typically 45 mph/72 kph—assume that unless the session displays otherwise.
    • Pit exit: Stay inside the blend line; traffic approaches T1 at high speed on your left. Do not merge into the racing line until after T1 when safe.

3) RACECRAFT PLAN (Ray FF1600)

  • Drafting zones:
    • Front straight (T14 → T1), Moraine Sweep (T3 → T5), Hurry Downs (T6/7 → T8), and Kettle Bottoms (T11 → T12).
  • Clean passing spots (preferred side and setup):
    • T1: Out-brake on driver’s right (inside). Set it up from T14 with a strong exit and draft; commit to a late apex to keep exit speed.
    • T5: Huge passing zone—inside (left) is preferred. Brake early, show nose, and square the exit up the hill.
    • T8: Inside (right) after Hurry Downs. Use draft + early, straight-line braking.
    • Canada Corner (T12): Inside (right) with a decisive brake move from draft. Keep it tidy for T13/T14 rhythm.
  • Defensive lines that maintain exit:
    • T1/T5/T12: Take a mild inside defend (one move). Focus on straight exits; don’t park it mid-corner or you’ll get repassed on exit.
  • Start/first-lap survival:
    • Brake 20–40 m earlier into T1 and T5. Expect accordions.
    • If center-pack into T1, choose the high-percentage line: outside can be safer if inside stacks up—leave escape room.
    • At Kink (T11) Lap 1–2: If in traffic or side-by-side, lift early and live to fight later.

5) BRAKING & GEARS (Rookie Baselines)

  • Baseline gears (assumption for FF1600 with minimal power):
    • 4th: Straights, T2/T4/T7, Kink (T11), often Carousel once comfortable.
    • 3rd: T1, T3, T6, T8, Canada (T12), T14.
    • 2nd: Optional only if you’re bogging in T5; otherwise prefer 3rd for stability and better traction.
  • First laps (cold tires/brakes):
    • T1: Brake at the 3→2.5 board; smooth long release into a late apex.
    • T5: Start at 4→3.5 board; straight pedal, then deep trail to rotate.
    • T12: 3 board safe; release patiently to late apex.
    • General: Favor long, light trail over stabs. Keep car balanced and pointed before throttle.
  • Mid-stint adjustments:
    • As track rubbers, grip up: move brake points ~5–10 m later; watch for rear rotation in T5/T12 as fronts gain bite.
    • If brakes fade, move bias slightly forward (+0.5–1.0%) and brake a touch earlier.
  • Gear validation:
    • If over-rev near apex or spinning wheels, use a higher gear.
    • If the car won’t pull out of the corner (flat acceleration), try the lower gear—compare delta over 2–3 laps.

6) CAR CONTROL CUES (Momentum Car Emphasis)

  • Rotation method: Use gentle trail-brake to nose the car in (T1, T3, T5, T8, T12, T14). If pushing mid-corner, a small lift is safer than extra steering.
  • Steering-angle discipline: In Carousel and long exits, unwind early to reduce scrub. If you’re adding more lock but not turning more, you’re slow—release a touch and let it roll.
  • Throttle patterns:
    • Aim for one clean application per corner. If you need to re-lift often, you turned too early or apexed too soon.
    • Uphill exits (T5, T14): Sooner throttle but smoother squeeze; avoid spikes that cause push or wheelspin.

7) CURBING, BUMPS & SURFACE CHANGES

  • Attack:
    • T5 inside curb is helpful; T8 inside ok; modest use at T1/T3/T6/T12/T14.
  • Avoid:
    • Kink (T11) inside curb—unsettles car severely; small error = big crash.
    • Large exit curb drops to grass at T1/T3/T8/T12—respect white lines.
  • Bumps/camber tricks:
    • T5: Use positive camber—trail deep and apex late; power up the hill.
    • T12: Positive camber supports late apex throttle; don’t turn early.
    • T13: Feels slightly off-camber at pace; keep speed in reserve and place the car.

8) SETUP / DRIVER ADJUSTMENTS

  • FIXED (assumed):
    • Driver adjustments:
      • Brake bias: Start 60–62% forward. If rear feels loose on entry (T5/T12), add +0.5–1.0% front. If it won’t rotate, trim -0.5%.
      • In-car: Prioritize bias for confidence into heavy brakings (T5/T12).
      • Tire pressures: Use series default; expect a lap or two to come in.
      • FFB: Enough weight to feel front scrub; avoid clipping—especially through Carousel/Kink.
  • If OPEN (conservative baseline philosophy):
    • Pressures: Target stable hot pressures per series norms (assumption: mid-20s psi). Keep deltas small across axles.
    • Camber: Modest negative front for rotation; don’t overdo—protect fronts in Carousel.
    • Toe: Minimal front toe-out (0.5–1.0 mm total) for turn-in; rear near zero.
    • ARBs/diff: If available, softer front ARB for mechanical grip; neutral diff coast for predictable entry.
    • Brake bias window: 60–62% to start, adjust to confidence.

9) TELEMETRY & METRICS TO TRACK

  • Sectors (practical splits):
    1. S/F to T3 exit (includes T1/T2): Focus on clean exits and no 1x.
    2. T3 exit to T5 exit: T3 exit speed = time. Watch braking into T5.
    3. T5 exit to T8 exit (Hurry Downs): T6 consistency and T8 braking.
    4. Carousel to Kink split: Minimum speed and steering saturation.
    5. Canada Corner to S/F: T12 braking + T14 exit.
  • Rookie targets (min speeds):
    • T3: ≥62–65 mph clean, no understeer drift.
    • Carousel (min): ≥72–75 mph with one throttle application.
    • T14: ≥60–65 mph, early throttle and clean hill climb.
  • Trace checks:
    • Brake release: Smooth, continuous taper; avoid “double release.”
    • Throttle pickup: One clean commit; delays >0.3 s after apex = early turn-in or over-slow.
    • Steering saturation: If maxed steer for long durations, widen entry and fix apex timing.

10) PRACTICE PLAN (45 minutes)

  • 0–10 min: Out-lap + references
    • Find brake boards for T1/T3/T5/T12/T14. Warm tires gradually.
    • Success: Zero offs; note one reliable marker per heavy brake zone.
  • 10–25 min: Corner families (exit speed focus)
    • Work on T3, Carousel, T14. Log min speeds and exit RPM.
    • Success: Improve each by ≥1–2 mph without adding 1x.
  • 25–35 min: 2×5-lap race-pace runs
    • Aim for consistent, safe laps; no 1x. Practice passes into T5 vs ghost/delta.
    • Success: Lap variance within ±0.5 s; zero incident run.
  • 35–40 min: Pit in/out at pace
    • Hit pit speed first try; clean merge at T1.
    • Success: No speeding, safe blend.
  • 40–45 min: Draft practice + cool‑down
    • Time a T14 run to pass into T1, or T3 run into T5.
    • Success: One clean overtake setup without contact or 1x.

11) QUICK CHECKLIST (pre‑race)

  • Brake bias start point: 61% forward (range 60–62%).
  • First‑lap brake margins: +25 m at T1, +35–40 m at T5; +20 m at T12.
  • Two “free time” fixes:
    • Look early and apex late at T3/T5/T14—protect exits onto straights.
    • Unwind steering sooner on long exits (Carousel/T14) to reduce scrub.
  • Two safety traps to avoid:
    • Kink inside curb—don’t touch it; lift if in dirty air.
    • Divebombs into T5—if you’re not clearly alongside by brake point, live to fight at T8/T12.
  • Fuel note:
    • Most rookie FF1600 races here won’t require a stop. If needed, plan roughly 1.6–2.0 L per lap (assumption) × race laps + 2–3 L buffer.

12) ONE‑PAGE SUMMARY

  • Late apexes and smooth exits at T3, Carousel, and T14 = lap time.
  • Brake early and deep-trail into T5/T12; let camber help rotation.
  • Protect SR: leave margins at T1/T3/T8/T12 exits; no heroics at the Kink.
  • Draft craft: Build runs from T14 for T1, from T3 for T5, from Carousel for Canada Corner.
  • Defensive, not destructive: one move to the inside at T1/T5/T12; prioritize exit speed.
  • Carousel discipline: one throttle application; unwind early to stop scrub.
  • Kink humility: lift if unsure or in turbulence; no inside curb.
  • Bias ~61% forward; adjust ±1% for confidence as stint evolves.
  • First two laps: +25 m T1, +35–40 m T5; avoid mid-corner surprises.
  • Consistency goal: ±0.5 s over a 5‑lap run with zero 1x.
