Master Momentum and Survival at Road Atlanta - Full Course

How to maximize consistency, safety, and maximizing exit speed for the Ray FF1600 (Formula Ford) at Road Atlanta - Full Course.

November 8, 2025

1) TRACK SNAPSHOT

  • Location & layout: Braselton, Georgia (USA). Full Course length ~2.54 mi / 4.09 km, clockwise. Official turn count: 12 (note: some alt. maps label kinks as T8/9; iRacing UI uses 12 primary corners with T10A/B chicane).
  • Character:
    • Elevation: Big downhill into the Esses (T2–T5) and the famous drop through T12. Natural-flowing, fast.
    • Camber: Helpful positive camber at T5; some neutral-to-light negative cambers elsewhere. T12 compresses at the bottom.
    • Surface quirks: Minor bumps on entries to T5 and T12; surface generally smooth but grip shifts with temp and rubber.
    • Curbs: Generally medium/flat. Inside curbs in the Esses can unsettle a light open wheeler if overused. T10A/B inside curbs are usable but don’t ride them aggressively in the FF.
  • Three corners that matter most for lap time:
    1. T7 (right hairpin onto back straight): Longest straight follows — maximize exit.
    2. T12 (fast downhill right): Huge commitment, defines front-straight speed and racecraft.
    3. T1 (fast right): Entry speed and balance set the tone into the Esses; small mistakes cascade.

2) INCIDENT & TRACK-LIMIT HOTSPOTS (Rookie Priorities)

  • T1 exit: Running wide over exit curb to grass is a common 1x and spin risk due to high speed and lateral load.
  • Esses (T3–T4): Overcutting inside curbs = off-tracks/slowdowns; outside grass catches slides. Don’t pass here early in stint.
  • T5 exit: Tempting throttle — outside curb → grass → wall. Stay disciplined; use the camber to hold.
  • T6 entry/exit: Late turn-in over-rotates; outside grass at exit causes 1x and spins.
  • T7 exit: Wheelspin and outside grass on throttle — time loss and 1x. Vital for back-straight speed.
  • T10A/B chicane: Cutting inside too much = slowdowns; braking too deep = rejoin hazards. Big Lap 1 stack-up zone.
  • T12 exit and pit wall: Off-track to the right or snap oversteer mid-corner can send you to the wall. Don’t pinch.
  • Safe rejoins:
    • Post-incident T1/T2/Esses: Stay off-line right; rejoin on a straight portion (short chute to T5).
    • After T10A/B: Use the escape road if needed; wait for a gap before rejoining.
  • Pit entry/exit:
    • Pit entry: Commit early, stay far right after T12; brake in a straight line along the wall. Speed line is at pit lane entry, don’t overshoot after a hot T12.
    • Pit exit: Stay right of the blend line along the pit-exit lane; do not cross back onto the racing line before the end of the line near T1. Cars on track will be turning in from the right—do not drift left into T1 traffic.

3) RACECRAFT PLAN (Ray FF1600)

  • Drafting zones and clean passing spots:
    • Back straight (T7→T10A): Prime draft; pass under brakes into T10A. Preferred side: inside (left) for T10A.
    • Front straight (T12→T1): Secondary draft; commit pass before turn-in or set up a late-apex over/under at T1 → complete before T5.
    • T6/T7 complex: If you get a better T5 exit, pressure into T6; clean move is inside T7 but only if you’re fully alongside before apex.
  • Defensive lines that preserve exits:
    • T10A: Center-left, brake straight; release smoothly to still square T10B and get a solid run to T12.
    • T1: Hold a mild mid-track entry; don’t pinch the exit — protect lightly without killing momentum.
    • T7: Show inside early to discourage divebombs; prioritize your own exit.
  • Start/first-lap survival:
    • Brake earlier at T1 and especially T10A. Expect pileups at both.
    • Through the Esses, hold single-file discipline; lift early if needed — zero heroics.
    • Safe escape routes: T1 outside runoff if boxed in; T10A escape road. Live to Lap 3.

5) BRAKING & GEARS (Rookie Baselines)

  • First laps (references and gears, Ray FF1600 assumed 4-speed):
    • T1: Light brush at ~200 ft; 4th gear; minor trail to set nose; release before apex.
    • T3/T4: Lifts only; 4th gear.
    • T5: Short brake; 3rd gear; use camber; long enough release to rotate.
    • T6: Medium brake; 3rd gear; clear release to apex; don’t rush throttle.
    • T7: Firm brake; 2nd gear; long trail to a very late apex; early straight wheel on exit.
    • T10A/B: Firm brake at ~300 ft; 2nd gear through both; prioritize exit to T12.
    • T12: Confidence lift only; 4th gear; settle car before full throttle.
  • Brake release notes: Favor long, gentle trail in T6, T7, T10A/B to rotate the car without scrubbing.
  • Mid‑stint adjustments:
    • As tires/track heat up: Brake a touch earlier and longer; move brake bias 0.5–1.0% rearward if initial turn-in dulls.
    • In cooling conditions: You can brake 5–10 m later; add a hair of front bias if locking rears.
  • Gear validation:
    • If you’re bouncing the limiter early on exits, upshift sooner or consider a higher gear.
    • If engine “falls flat” mid-corner (no pull), try one gear lower once; keep fastest delta.

6) CAR CONTROL CUES (Momentum Car Emphasis)

  • Rotation method: Use trail brake to the apex in T6/T7/T10A; use controlled lifts in the Esses and T12 to set front bite without upsetting balance.
  • Steering-angle discipline: Minimize sawing. Straighten the wheel early at T7 exit and T10B exit to reduce scrub and protect speed onto the straights.
  • Throttle patterns:
    • T7: Patience to apex → squeeze progressively to full as you unwind.
    • T10A/B: Maintenance throttle between A→B; then commit on B apex as wheel opens.
    • T12: Small lift to set → commit smoothly; don’t stab at throttle.

7) CURBING, BUMPS & SURFACE CHANGES

  • Curbs to attack:
    • T5 inside curb helps rotation (moderately). T10A/B small bites okay.
  • Curbs to avoid:
    • Esses inside curbs (T3/T4) — too much = bounce/1x. T12 inside: unsettles the car.
  • Bumps/camber tricks:
    • T5 positive camber: Hug inside, it “catches” the car; you can throttle earlier.
    • T12 compression: Car grips at the bottom; trust it but avoid abrupt inputs.
    • Slight surface change into T6 entry: Trail in progressively to avoid snap.

8) SETUP / DRIVER ADJUSTMENTS

  • FIXED (assumed): Focus on in-car and driving:
    • Brake bias: Start ~61–62% forward. Adjust ±1% for stability (more forward if rear is nervous on entry).
    • Starting tire pressures: Use series default; expect 1–2 laps to come in. Don’t chase pressures; chase consistency.
    • FFB: Ensure no clipping; set so you can feel front bite changes in T6/T7.
  • If OPEN (conservative baseline):
    • Pressures: Aim for stable hot pressures; don’t over-pressurize (maintain predictable slip).
    • Camber: Modest negative front for bite; rear near neutral for traction.
    • Toe: Small front toe-out for response; rear near zero.
    • Brake bias window: 60–62% forward.
    • Diff/coast (if available): Softer coast to help rotation in T6/T7; don’t overdo to avoid instability.

9) TELEMETRY & METRICS TO TRACK

  • Sectors (practical splits):
    1. S/F to T5 exit (T1 + Esses execution)
    2. T5 exit to T7 exit (traction + T6/T7)
    3. T7 exit to T10B exit (back-straight speed + chicane)
    4. T10B exit to S/F (T12 commitment)
  • Rookie targets:
    • T7 min: ~45–50 mph; clean exit — zero wheelspin.
    • T12 min: ~90–100 mph with a stable line.
    • T1 min: ~90–95 mph without off-track risk.
    • Lap variance goal: ±0.3–0.5 s over a 5‑lap run (no 1x).
  • Trace review:
    • Brake release timing: Smooth, continuous trails in T6/T7/T10A.
    • Throttle pickup delay: Minimize hesitation at T7/T10B; ensure you’re unwinding wheel.
    • Steering saturation: Look for maxed steering angles = scrub; aim for earlier straightening.

10) PRACTICE PLAN (45 minutes)

  • 0–10 min: Out-lap + references
    • Find brake boards (T1 ~200 ft, T10A ~300 ft).
    • Warm tires gradually; no 1x. Success: 1 clean banker lap, identified 3 braking references.
  • 10–25 min: Corner families
    • Work T7 exits (5 reps) and T12 confidence lifts (5 reps). Log min speeds.
    • Success: +2 mph average at T7 exit without 1x; consistent T12 lift point.
  • 25–35 min: 2×5‑lap race-pace runs
    • Focus on consistency, safe lines through traffic zones.
    • Success: Each 5‑lap run within ±0.5 s, zero 1x.
  • 35–40 min: Pit in/out at pace
    • Hit pit speed line cleanly, stay to pit-exit blend line. Success: 2 clean pit cycles, no speeding or blend violations.
  • 40–45 min: Draft practice + cool-down
    • Practice a T10A pass and a T1 defend with a friend/AI if possible. Success: 1 clean pass, 1 clean defend, no contact.

11) QUICK CHECKLIST (pre‑race)

  • Brake bias start point: 61–62% forward.
  • First‑lap brake margins: +30–40 m at T1, +60–80 m at T10A.
  • Two “free time” fixes:
    • Unwind the wheel earlier at T7 and T10B exits.
    • Commit to one decisive lift for T12 instead of multiple small lifts.
  • Two safety traps to avoid:
    • Forcing a pass in the Esses.
    • Pinching the car at T12 exit near the wall.
  • Fuel note: Estimate ~0.35–0.45 gal/lap (1.3–1.7 L/lap). Plan race length laps × per‑lap + 1 lap buffer. If unsure, add +2 laps.

12) ONE‑PAGE SUMMARY

  • Prioritize T7 and T12 — they define your lap and racecraft.
  • Brake earlier than you think at T10A on Lap 1; use the escape road if needed.
  • In the Esses, stabilize the platform with gentle lifts — don’t attack big inside curbs.
  • Use T5 camber to rotate; be patient with throttle on exit.
  • Long, gentle trail braking rotates the FF without scrubbing speed.
  • Defend center-left into T10A; don’t kill your T10B exit.
  • Pit exit: stay right of the blend line through T1; do not cross into traffic.
  • Target rookie mins: T1 ~90–95 mph, T7 ~45–50 mph, T12 ~90–100 mph.
  • Consistency goal: ±0.5 s over 5 laps with zero 1x.
  • Race start: survive T1 and T10A; no passes in the Esses — live to Lap 3.
