Master Momentum and Survival at Summit Point Raceway - Jefferson
How to maximize consistency, safety, and maximizing exit speed for the Ray FF1600 (Formula Ford) at Summit Point Raceway - Jefferson.
November 8, 2025
1) TRACK SNAPSHOT
- Location & layout: Summit Point Motorsports Park (West Virginia, USA). Jefferson Circuit is a short, technical club course. Approx length: ~1.1 mi / 1.7 km (assumption), clockwise (assumption). Official turn count varies by source; this guide uses 10 working corners for clarity.
- Character:
- Tight, linked corners favoring patience and rotation at low-to-medium speeds.
- Subtle elevation and camber changes; mostly flat with localized helpful camber in some apexes.
- Surface: generally smooth; patches in braking zones can be slick when hot.
- Curbs: mostly low/flat paint you can brush. Some exit curbs are rough/unsettling for open-wheel—treat with respect.
- Three corners that matter most for lap time:
- T10 final right onto front straight — exit speed carries the whole main straight.
- T3 tight right (hairpin) onto the back straight — best passing setup and huge momentum gain.
- Fast right-left “Esses” mid-lap (T5–T6 in this guide) — speed management here sets up the next sector; overdriving destroys the following exit.
2) INCIDENT & TRACK-LIMIT HOTSPOTS (Rookie Priorities)
- Main 1x/slowdown zones:
- T1 outside exit: braking while turning can push you to grass; easy 1x.
- T3 hairpin exit: greedy throttle → rear steps; drop wheels on exit curb/grass = 1x/spin.
- T5–T6 Esses: cutting too deep over inner curbs or running wide on exit.
- T7 long right carousel exit: throttle push to the outer curb; little runoff.
- T9 left transition into T10: small snap over bumps/curb while trying to early-throttle.
- Pit exit blend into T1: crossing solid line or unsafe merge.
- Safe rejoin areas:
- If off at T1/T3, stay off throttle and rejoin parallel to the racing line; wait for a gap—don’t U‑turn across traffic.
- After T6–T7 off-track, keep wheels straight, slow the car fully in the grass, rejoin at shallow angle.
- Pit entry/exit gotchas:
- Pit entry: short and easy to overshoot; commit early, bleed speed before the cone.
- Pit exit: merges near the T1 braking area; stay tight to pit exit line until fully merged. Cars on main line have priority; don’t jink across.
3) RACECRAFT PLAN (Ray FF1600)
- Drafting zones and passes:
- Front straight into T1: classic slipstream pass. Preferred move: inside into T1 with a late-but-controlled brake; finish early to protect exit.
- Back straight from T3 exit to T4 kink: set up by a superior T3 exit. Show nose early, take inside into the next braking.
- T10: dive-bomb risk is high; only attempt with clear overlap by turn-in.
- Defensive lines that preserve exit:
- T1/T3: defend inside early, brake on the line, roll off brake progressively, open hands early to keep exit speed. Avoid parking the car at apex; it kills your run and invites a switchback.
- Start/first-lap survival:
- Brake 10–20 m earlier at T1 and T3; anticipate accordion effects.
- Pileups: T1 first lap, T3 hairpin, and T5–T6 if two-wide. If it stacks, bail early to the outside runoff with straight wheels.
- Safe escapes: outside of T1 and inside runoff at T3 are usually safest.
4) DRIVING LINE & MARKERS (Corner-by-corner)
Note: Numbering is a practical 10-corner scheme. Adapt to your in‑sim map.
| T# | Name | Priority* | Approach Ref | Brake Point | Trail? | Apex Type | Min Speed (rookie target) | Throttle On | Exit Trackout | Kerb Use | Risk/Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| T1 | Right 90 | High | Right wall/100–50 boards | ~60–70 m after 100 board | Yes, light | Late, 2/3 in | ~60–65 km/h (37–40 mph) | As car points | Full to L edge | Brush inside; avoid big exit curb | Easy to over-slow; protect exit |
| T2 | Left kink | Low | Left paint seam | No brake; small lift if needed | No | Mid | ~115–125 km/h (70–78 mph) | Maintenance | Stay mid-right | Minimal | Don’t pinch; set up T3 |
| T3 | Tight Right Hairpin | High | Left-side curb/100 board | ~80–100 m | Yes, long | Very late/late apex | ~45–50 km/h (28–31 mph) | Smooth, as soon as rotated | Use full L edge | Light apex kiss | Spinning on throttle is common |
| T4 | Left kink on back straight | Low | Right-side edge | None | No | Open | ~140+ km/h (87+ mph) | Full | Right to left | None | Eyes up for next |
| T5 | Right of Esses | Med | Left-side curb | Brush brake / short lift | Minimal | Early-mid | ~95–105 km/h (59–65 mph) | Blend | To L for T6 | Low inside curb only | Overuse curb unsettles FF |
| T6 | Left of Esses | High | Right edge after T5 | Roll brake from T5 | Yes | Late-mid | ~85–95 km/h (53–59 mph) | Squeeze as you unwind | Full R edge | Brush only | Sets run to T7—priority |
| T7 | Long Right (Carousel) | High | Left edge; marshal post | Small brake earlier than you think | Yes, long/feather | Late, hold | ~75–85 km/h (47–53 mph) | Feed in steadily | Full L edge | Avoid exit curb if bumpy | Patience; don’t bind front tires |
| T8 | Short Left | Med | Right edge | Light brush or lift | Minimal | Late | ~80–90 km/h (50–56 mph) | Early but gentle | Use R edge | Minimal | Don’t over-turn; momentum corner |
| T9 | Left Setup for T10 | Med | Right edge after short chute | Small brake | Yes | Late | ~70–80 km/h (43–50 mph) | Maintenance | Mid track | Avoid big inner curb | Keep car balanced for T10 |
| T10 | Final Right onto Straight | Very High | Left wall/50 board | ~50–70 m | Yes, precise | Late, diamond if needed | ~60–65 km/h (37–40 mph) | Earliest possible without push | Full L edge | Light apex brush; avoid exit bounce | Most important exit on lap |

5) BRAKING & GEARS (Rookie Baselines)
- First laps references (Ray FF1600 typical gearing assumption):
- T1: 4th to 2nd, brake at ~70 m after 100 board, long/soft trail. Release before apex to rotate.
- T3: 3rd to 2nd, brake at ~90–100 m, long trail; rotate on release, wait for bite, then throttle.
- T5–T6: Stay 3rd; brush brake/lift to set the nose, tiny trail to stabilize.
- T7: 3rd gear; small earlier brake, long/feathered trail to keep front loaded.
- T10: 3rd to 2nd, brake ~60 m, crisp release; prioritize exit.
- Brake release notes:
- This car rewards long, gentle trail to rotate. If you coast mid-corner, you’ll lose front grip; if you hold brakes too long, you’ll pinch and kill exit.
- Mid-stint adjustments:
- As tires heat/fade: move brake bias +0.5–1.0% forward; brake a car length earlier at T1/T3/T10.
- If track rubbers in: slightly later brake is possible, but only after consistency is rock solid.
- Gear validation:
- If you bog exiting T3/T10, try 1 gear lower (but beware wheelspin).
- If you hit the limiter early on short chutes, upshift sooner; check delta. Prioritize exit pull over peak RPM.
6) CAR CONTROL CUES (Momentum Car Emphasis)
- Rotation:
- Use trail braking to point the car; supplement with a brief lift if front won’t bite at medium speed (T6/T7).
- Steering discipline:
- Unwind hands early on exits (T1, T3, T10). Any extra steering angle equals scrub and lost speed.
- Throttle patterns:
- “Squeeze, don’t stab.” Especially T3/T7/T10. Commit to throttle only when you can open your hands.
- In the Esses, use maintenance throttle to balance; avoid full lift mid-transition unless saving an oversteer.
7) CURBING, BUMPS & SURFACE CHANGES
- Curbs to use:
- Inside brushes at T1/T3/T10 are okay but avoid climbing them aggressively.
- In the Esses (T5–T6), minimal curb—just a brush. Too much unsettles the FF1600’s light rear.
- Curbs to avoid:
- Exit curbs at T3, T7, T10 can be bumpy; keep at least half the car on tarmac when applying throttle.
- Surface tricks:
- Mild positive camber at some apexes (T7/T10) rewards later apex and patient throttle.
- Watch for darker patches in heavy braking (T1/T3); in heat they reduce grip—brake a touch earlier.
8) SETUP / DRIVER ADJUSTMENTS
- Assumption: FIXED setup in the official FF1600 series.
- Driver adjustments:
- Brake bias: start ~56–58% forward; if rear feels loose on entry, add +0.5–1.0%.
- In-car anti-roll/diff: typically limited or none on the Ray FF1600—drive around balance with brake release and throttle timing.
- Tire pressures: monitor after runs; even temps and stable pressures matter more than exact numbers in fixed sets.
- FFB: ensure no clipping; you need detail for micro-slips in T3/T7.
(If OPEN: keep cambers moderate, a hint of front toe-out for response, neutral rear toe; prioritize stable braking and forgiving rotation over peak rotation.)
9) TELEMETRY & METRICS TO TRACK
- Sector breakdown (example):
- S1: Start/Finish to T3 exit (T1 heavy brake + T3 hairpin).
- S2: T3 exit through T7 exit (includes Esses and carousel).
- S3: T8 to finish (T9–T10 technical + critical final exit).
- Rookie targets:
- T3 min speed: 45–50 km/h (28–31 mph), clean throttle on exit.
- T7 min speed: 75–85 km/h (47–53 mph), stable platform.
- T10 min speed: 60–65 km/h (37–40 mph), early full throttle.
- Lap-to-lap variance goal: ±0.3–0.5 s over a 10-lap stint, zero 1x.
- What to inspect on traces:
- Brake release timing into T1/T3/T10—smooth S-shaped release, not on/off.
- Throttle pickup delay after rotation—too early causes push/oversteer; too late kills momentum.
- Steering saturation—if angle holds steady while speed drops, you’re scrubbing; fix with earlier rotation and straighter exits.
10) PRACTICE PLAN (45 minutes)
- 0–10 min: Out-lap + references
- Find brake boards for T1/T3/T10; note visual landmarks.
- Warm tires gently; no 1x. Success: 2 clean laps, consistent T1/T3 brake points within a car length.
- 10–25 min: Corner families
- Focus on T3, T7, T10 exits. Log min speed and throttle-on points.
- Success: +2–3 km/h min speed gain without extra steering or 1x.
- 25–35 min: 2×5-lap race-pace runs
- Aim for consistency at 9/10ths. No off-tracks.
- Success: Variance ≤0.5 s, zero 1x, clean traffic awareness.
- 35–40 min: Pit in/out reps
- Practice at pace; no speeding; proper blend at T1.
- Success: 2 perfect pit cycles.
- 40–45 min: Draft practice + cool-down
- Practice T1/T3 passes and safe defense.
- Success: 2 clean passes, 0 contact, controlled exits.
11) QUICK CHECKLIST (pre‑race)
- Brake bias start point: 57% (range 56–58% safe).
- First‑lap brake margins: +15–20 m at T1; +10–15 m at T3.
- Two “free time” fixes:
- Look to apex early, but commit to throttle only when you can open your hands.
- Trail off brakes smoothly; avoid coasting in mid-corner.
- Two safety traps to avoid:
- Forcing a move into T10 without overlap—often ends in contact.
- Powering over exit curbs at T3/T7—wheelspin and 1x risk.
- Fuel note: Most FF1600 races here are no-stop. Add enough for race distance plus 2 extra laps for grid/green-white-checker contingencies.
12) ONE‑PAGE SUMMARY
- Jefferson is about exits: T3 and T10 matter most; T7 carousel sets the mid-lap.
- Brake earlier than you think on Lap 1—T1 and T3 stack-ups are common.
- Ray FF1600 rotates best with gentle trail; then straighten and squeeze throttle.
- Don’t over-use curbs in the Esses; keep the platform calm.
- Defend inside at T1/T3 early; prioritize exit to avoid switchbacks.
- If in doubt, slow in, fast out—especially at T10.
- Watch for bumpy exit curbs (T3/T7/T10); keep at least two wheels solidly on tarmac on throttle.
- Use draft for T1/T3 passes; complete move by turn-in, no dive-bombs.
- Track limits: T1/T3 exits and T5–T6 cuts are the main 1x traps.
- Consistency > peak pace. Target ±0.3–0.5 s variance and zero incidents.
