Master Momentum and Survival at Winton Motor Raceway - National

How to maximize consistency, safety, and maximizing exit speed for the Ray FF1600 (Formula Ford) at Winton Motor Raceway - National.

November 8, 2025

1) TRACK SNAPSHOT

  • Location & layout: Benalla, Victoria, Australia. National circuit approx. 3.0 km (1.86 mi), clockwise. Official turn count used here: 12 (note: alternate maps may show slight numbering differences).
  • Character:
    • Mostly flat; low elevation change.
    • Stop‑go sections mixed with tight switchbacks; a couple of medium-fast sweepers.
    • Surface can feel “greasy” when cold; braking zones into hairpins can be bumpy.
    • Curbs: Predominantly low-to-medium ripple strips; some exit kerbs can be tall/edgy—use with care in a light Formula Ford.
  • Three corners that matter most for lap time (Ray FF1600):
    1. T7 Right Hairpin (onto the back straight): Longest sustained acceleration—exit is king.
    2. T12 Final Right (onto front straight): Sets your S/F speed and race runs; prioritize a clean, early drive.
    3. T1 Right Sweeper: Entry speed and a stable transition into heavy braking for T2; big time if you can roll speed without scrubbing.

2) INCIDENT & TRACK-LIMIT HOTSPOTS (Rookie Priorities)

  • T1 braking/turn-in to T2 hairpin: High Lap‑1 concertina; rear lockups if you over-brake while turning. Leave margin.
  • T2 Left Hairpin exit: Wheelspin and off-track on outside kerb; unsafe rejoins if you loop it—wait for gaps and rejoin parallel to racing line.
  • T3–T5 switchbacks: Easy 1x by pinching exits or climbing inner sausages; rotate with lift/trail, not curb-hopping.
  • T7 Hairpin braking: Late-brake traps with side-by-side cars; don’t turn across traffic on exit—stay predictable.
  • T8–T9 Essess: If flat or near-flat, running wide over green/paint can be a 1x; small lifts beat scrappy slides.
  • T10 Long Right: Rear can rotate on throttle; outside track limits if you open hands too late.
  • T12 Final Right: Over-attack apex curb unsettles car; exit wall/grass will punish early throttle.
  • Safe rejoin guidance:
    • After spins at hairpins (T2/T7), stop the car, wait for a full gap, rejoin parallel to flow—do not U‑turn across the racing line.
  • Pit entry/exit gotchas:
    • Pit entry: On the main straight—commit early, stay right, and slow before the pit speed line; don’t dart across from the racing groove late.
    • Pit exit: Stay along the blend line to the right; do not merge until the line ends (usually after T1 area). Cars on the racing line have priority.

3) RACECRAFT PLAN (Ray FF1600)

  • Drafting zones:
    • Front straight (short-to-medium effect).
    • Back straight after T7 (best tow; plan passes here).
  • Clean passing spots:
    • T2 Left Hairpin: Out-brake with a stable, shallow entry; prefer inside. Set it up from a tidy T1.
    • T7 Right Hairpin: Classic pass under brakes; defend inside, but don’t overslow.
    • T12 Final Right: Riskier; possible if you get a big run from T10–T11, but prioritize exit.
  • Setup moves for passes:
    • Lift earlier into the preceding corner to straighten exit sooner; prioritize exit speed, then use the draft.
  • Defensive lines that preserve exit:
    • T2/T7: Cover inside early; brake slightly earlier and focus on a squared, clean exit. Don’t park the apex—just a firm, short apex hold then open hands early.
  • Start/first-lap survival:
    • Brake +20–30 m earlier into T1/T2; expect divebombs.
    • Biggest pileups: T2/Lap 1 and T7/Lap 1–2.
    • Escape routes: Use the outer runoff at T1/T2 if needed; keep wheels straight under braking if you must go straight to avoid contact.

4) DRIVING LINE & MARKERS (Corner-by-corner)

Note: Turn names are generic here; verify numbering with your in-sim map.

Gears (starter guess, 4‑speed FF1600): T1 3rd; T2 2nd; T3 3rd; T4 3rd; T5 2nd; T6 3rd; T7 2nd; T8/9 3rd; T10 3rd (possible 2nd if you’re bogging); T11 3rd; T12 2nd or strong 3rd if gearing allows. Validate in-sim by engine pull vs over-rev on exits.

5) BRAKING & GEARS (Rookie Baselines)

  • First laps references (adjust with boards visible in your build):
    • T1: Light lift/brush ~50–70 m pre-apex; keep it tidy for T2.
    • T2: 100–75 m board; straight-line hard brake, then long, gentle trail.
    • T5: 75–50 m; long trail to rotate.
    • T7: 125–100 m; straight-line hard, then patient trail.
    • T10: Early light brush; long, gentle release to keep front loaded without snapping rear.
    • T12: 75–50 m; firm initial, then long trail to a late apex.
  • Brake release notes:
    • Aim for long, linear trails into slow corners (T2/T5/T7/T12) to help rotation without stabbing throttle.
  • Mid‑stint adjustments:
    • As tires come in, move brake bias rearward 0.5–1.0% to aid rotation.
    • As fronts overheat/grease, move bias forward 0.3–0.5% and lengthen brake zones 5–10 m.
  • Gears uncertainty guidance:
    • If bogging on exits (RPM drops too low), try one gear lower.
    • If wheelspin is constant mid-exit, try one gear higher or smoother throttle.
    • Use delta: whichever gear yields a faster exit delta to +50–100 m after corner is correct.

6) CAR CONTROL CUES (Momentum Car Emphasis)

  • Rotation method: Use gentle trail brake into slow corners; in medium sweepers (T1/T10) a small lift before turn-in can rotate without sliding.
  • Steering-angle discipline: Open the wheel early on exits (T7/T12 especially). If you’re adding steering while accelerating, you’re losing time.
  • Throttle patterns:
    • Hairpins: Quick but smooth pickup once pointed; avoid “stuttering” throttle—commit.
    • Sweepers: Squeeze on progressively; don’t spike throttle and upset the rear.
    • Switchbacks: Brief maintenance throttle to settle, then early but partial application.

7) CURBING, BUMPS & SURFACE CHANGES

  • Attack:
    • Shallow skim of apex curbs at T1, T8/9, T10 is fine if it doesn’t bounce the car.
  • Avoid:
    • Big inner “sausage” curbs at T2/T12—will launch the car and cause 1x or spins.
    • Aggressive exit kerb at T5/T12—edgy in a light FF1600; keep at least half a tire on the black.
  • Bumps/camber:
    • T2/T7 braking zones can feel choppy; brake in a straight line and avoid turning while still at peak pressure.
    • Slight helpful camber mid-apex at some slow corners; use a late apex to sit the car into it and fire off.

8) SETUP / DRIVER ADJUSTMENTS

  • FIXED (assumed): Driver adjustments only.
    • Brake bias: Start 58% front. Range 57–60% depending on rotation vs stability needs.
    • In-car anti-roll (if available in your series): Keep soft; prioritize mechanical grip.
    • Tire pressures: Use session default; the FF1600 likes stable hot pressures—avoid big slides early.
    • FFB: Ensure you’re not clipping; set so you can feel front bite loss in T1/T10.
  • If OPEN (only if your session is open):
    • Conservative baseline: Slightly higher front pressure for responsiveness; neutral-to-slight toe-out front (0.5–1.0 mm total), near-zero rear toe.
    • Camber: Moderate negative front; modest rear negative. Keep it safe to preserve tire over race run.
    • Brake bias: 58% ±1% window.
    • ARBs: Softer overall to maintain compliance over curbs and bumps.

9) TELEMETRY & METRICS TO TRACK

  • Sector breakdown (example):
    • S1: Start/Finish to exit T3 (T1–T2 execution and early change of direction).
    • S2: T4 to exit T7 (switchback discipline + T7 exit).
    • S3: T8 to Finish (sweepers discipline + T12 exit).
  • Rookie targets (Ray FF1600):
    • Min speed T7: 55–60 km/h; focus on zero wheelspin and early throttle.
    • Min speed T12: 70–80 km/h; no curb bounce, smooth drive.
    • Min speed T1: 105–115 km/h; minimal scrub.
    • Lap variance goal: Within ±0.3–0.5 s over a 5‑lap run without 1x.
  • What to inspect on traces:
    • Brake release: Smooth, continuous ramps into apex; no “off‑on” spikes.
    • Throttle pickup: Minimal delay from apex to first sustained application; once you go, don’t lift again.
    • Steering saturation: Avoid long periods at max steering; earlier unwind correlates with better exits.

10) PRACTICE PLAN (45 minutes)

  • 0–10 min: Out-lap + references
    • Tasks: Identify 50/75/100/150 m boards; check bumps into T2/T7; warm tires gently.
    • Success: Clean laps, zero 1x; confirm initial brake points.
  • 10–25 min: Corner families
    • Focus: Exits at T7 and T12; entry stability at T1.
    • Log: Min speeds at T1/T7/T12 and throttle-on points.
    • Success: Each target corner improves by 1–2 km/h without extra 1x.
  • 25–35 min: 2×5-lap race-pace runs
    • Goal: Consistency and traffic awareness lines.
    • Success: Each 5-lap set within ±0.5 s spread; zero 1x.
  • 35–40 min: Pit in/out practice
    • Goal: Hit speed limiter line cleanly; blend properly on exit.
    • Success: Two perfect pit ins and outs without speeding or unsafe blend.
  • 40–45 min: Draft practice + cool down
    • Goal: One pass setup into T7 or T2 using a measured lift to maximize exit.
    • Success: Execute one clean pass with a clean exit; cooldown lap to reset.

11) QUICK CHECKLIST (pre‑race)

  • Brake bias start point: 58% front (adjust ±0.5–1% as you gain confidence).
  • First‑lap brake margins: +20–30 m at T1/T2.
  • Two “free time” fixes:
    • Unwind steering earlier on exits (especially T7/T12).
    • Commit to throttle once applied—no mid-exit dithering.
  • Two safety traps to avoid:
    • Diving T2/T7 from too far back—causes pileups.
    • Riding big inner curbs at T2/T12—unsettles car and causes 1x.
  • Fuel note: Assumption ~0.6 L/lap. For a 20‑lap race: 12 L + 2 L buffer = 14 L total. Verify with your session’s fuel burn.

12) ONE‑PAGE SUMMARY

  • Brake early and straight into T2/T7; long, gentle trails to rotate.
  • Prioritize exits at T7 (back straight) and T12 (front straight).
  • T1/T10: small lift or light brake to rotate; avoid mid-corner slides.
  • Use minimal curb—skim, don’t clatter. Avoid big inner sausages at T2/T12.
  • Start safe: +20–30 m brake margin at T1/T2; expect concertina.
  • Passing: Set up exits and draft; finish the move into T2 or T7 on the inside.
  • Defensive: Cover inside early, but protect exit speed—no parking the apex.
  • Steering discipline: Open hands early; throttle only when you can unwind.
  • Track limits: Watch T8/9 exits and T10 outside. Keep at least half a tire on the black.
  • Consistency target: 5‑lap runs within ±0.5 s, zero 1x before you push for PBs.

This plan is built for a momentum car with rookie priorities: carry speed, protect the car, and win on the exits. Use it to build consistency first—your lap time will follow.
